Year in Finished Games: 2015

Last year was not very weeabo. But this year, this year will be straight up Midwest Anime Con in a church basement weeabo. I want to make major headway on my PS2 and PS3 backlog.

Runaway: A Twist of Fate

1. Runaway: A Twist of Fate

Finished January 2015. Brian Fucking Basco, what mischief have you gotten yourself into this time? This is the the 3rd and final game in the Runaway series from Pendulo. I was expecting to loathe this game as much as I did the first two, but I was pleasantly surprised. They toned the racist caricatures and nonsensical pixel hunting. They added a hint system and an overlay that shows what objects you can interact with in the environments. The writing also got a whole lot more ambitious and there are some genuinely funny moments. I'll take a break for now, but this made me interested in Pendulo's follow up games.

Saints Row IV

2. Saints Row IV

Finished January 2015. What a fun, silly game. It is remarkable it is as well made as it is. I am going to wait a little before I dive into Gat out of Hell.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

3. Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

Finished February 2015. I finished the second half of the PSP Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection. Probably the best Final Fantasy game since VI. I was really impressed by the writing. Characters had depth and the story got really dark. My only complaint was the last chapter. Up until that point each of the 10 character chapters are a tight 2-3 hours, but the last one is 20+ hours long and is mostly a continuous dungeon crawl / boss rush. You re-fight almost every boss from Final Fantasy IV, the preceding chapters, and a few cameo bosses from other Final Fantasy games. It became a bit tedious. Otherwise, good stuff.

Broken Age

4. Broken Age

Finished June 2015. The first game I beat in months (thanks grad school!), I really enjoyed the first half, but I disliked the second half. The reuse of environments, constant backtracking, and confusing puzzle ruined my opinion of the game.

Her Story

5. Her Story

Finished July 2015. It was an interesting experience. The story was well told and the gamification of using a search engine to reveal the story in a non linear fashion was novel. I played with pen and notepad and pieced together the characters and events. I would play another game like this again.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut

6. Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut

Finished August 2015. Great narrative with well written storytelling. The mechanics are shallow. Each "class" feels shallow. I enjoyed it.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes

7. Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes

Finished September 2015. How did this take me 62 hours to finish? It's Bejeweled RPG. Enjoyed it while playing but it could have been much shorter.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

8. Star Wars: The Old Republic

Finished(?) October 2015. I played a Sith Inquisitor to the final act. I played over 80 hours before deciding I had my fill of MMO gameplay. I may return one day to play through the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion -- I've heard good things, but for now I'm putting this back on the shelf.

Fallout 4

9. Fallout 4

Finished November 2015. Because I had trouble triggering the final chapter of the game, I played for almost 110 hours, most of that time was spent clearing out the same areas over and over again. I would have played a lot less if I knew how to move the story forward. Building up settlements was fun at first but shallow. By the end I was just building square structures and placing as many sleeping bags in them as possible.

Banished

10. Banished

Finished December 2015. As a city builder, the game doesn't really have an ending, but I felt I saw everything the game had to offer after 45 hours of playing. It's a really good, stripped down builder.
