GOTY 2014

A ranking of the games I've played from 2014.

Showing 1-10 of 26 items

The Talos Principle

1. The Talos Principle

The best mix of puzzles and narrative since Portal 2. I love how the story weaves together philosophy, religious, and technological themes.

South Park: The Stick of Truth

2. South Park: The Stick of Truth

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

3. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Everything that's right about the Assassin's Creed series and the Rocksteady Batman games in one beautiful package. The nemesis system is a fantastic addition to the open-world genre.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

4. Wolfenstein: The New Order

I had heard a lot about Wolfenstein before I came to it but the world building and characters still blew me away. The characters feel so genuine and real. They don't worship you, they feel like real people with hopes and fears. The story moves along very quickly with some really neat set pieces. The massive WWII invasion of Deathhead's compound is so neat and feels so dynamic. The concentration camp feels oppressive and terrible. There are moments when you feel like a supreme badass and other moments when you the Nazis seem incredibly powerful. The gameplay is fairly tight, the shooting feels pretty good but my main issue is with navigating corridors and fairly cramped environments. This is probably true to the old game but it feels very constricted with artificial barriers everywhere. There wasn't too much strategy in how to approach enemies but I didn't mind--that's not really what this game is about. The world feels real, terrible but the people are human in the best way.

The Fall

5. The Fall

A great story with tremendous atmosphere. The way the puzzles relate directly to the narrative is fantastic as well.
