    In Inuit Mythology

The Tuurngait is said to be spirits unconnected by physical bodies. Some were good and helpful spirits, others were evil and monstrous. The spirits were even said to be able to possess humans and control their decisions.

    In Penumbra

During a excavation at North-Western Mine in Greenland, a team of researchers discover an tomb and awakens an ancient spirit; the Tuurngait. The Tuurngait felt threatened by the humans and possessed the whole mine - dogs, spiders and rock worms included.

    Spoilers:

At the end of Penumbra: Black Plague, the player is directly confronted by the spirits themselves, which--after proving yourself worthy in a series of tests--asks you to help them by destroying the North-Western Mine and thereby removing every trace of them so that they may rest again.
