The game was programmed (as Stugan) on the Oden mainframe at the Stockholm Computer Science Central QZ by teenage programmers Kimmo Eriksson, Viggo Eriksson and Olle E Johansson, inspired by the mainframe text adventure Colossal Cave Adventure from 1976 and later Zork. In 1986 the game was re-released for home computers by Scandinavian PC Systems, including a translation into English as The Cottage.

It takes place in a cottage in Småland, southern Sweden. Players use the cardinal directions to explore the rooms of the building, that turn out to be much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. All in all, the small house has nine floors, an elevator, an underground cave system and its own telephone company. Treasure found by the players can be exchanged for points in a nearby house.
