I sure think so!
I tend to stay away from the general "favorite" game/movie/song/etc gobbledegook, but when I count up the games I've loved more than any other, System Shock 2 is usually at the top of the list.
Those who have played it, do you agree? I've yet to encounter a game with such an incredibly terrifying atmosphere and delivery of story. BioShock could have been a true successor, but ended up getting neutered, which, I can tell you, pains me to no end.
Those that haven't played it, what are you doing reading this post?! Go play one of the best games ever made. Scoot! Scoot now!
System Shock 2
Game » consists of 6 releases. Released Aug 11, 1999
Developed by Looking Glass Studios and released in 1999, this cyberpunk first-person shooter with RPG elements established new standards for storytelling and gameplay.
Quite possibly one of if not the single greatest game yet made?
I believe SystemShock 2 was the first fps i ever owned. Well... it was that Doom demo, but SS2 was my first retail game. Dont remember much though. I was like maybe, 10-12 years old. But i do remember the terrifying creepyness! And the weapon/item system. But thats about all i remember.
I've just got the game, and am trying to play through it for the first time, but I'm having problems (Tech wise). Anyone wanna help?
System Shock 2 is an absolutely excellent game, even if a bit frustrating at times (not a fan of weapon degradation). My fondness of the game has also lead to some excitement for me over the upcoming title, Dead Space which will seem to share some similar aspects like mutants.... and space (though there will be no devilish AI involved).
microwavedapple, could you be more specific about your problems?
I enjoyed it at the time - might go back to it based on your enthusiasm though. But I remember that everything that came in the years after Half-Life paled in comparison for me, although there's only a passing resemblance between the games (ironic, because the original System Shock was eclipsed by another fps, Doom). I also think that Deus Ex took the genre to the next level soon after SS2.
"I've just got the game, and am trying to play through it for the first time, but I'm having problems (Tech wise). As for obtaining the game. There are obvious illegal ways to get it but you should probably download a demo and see if you like it and then perhaps go to the next step and hunt for it on eBay or Amazon Sellers listings. The game is still kinda hard to come by these days but it's still not impossible to find.
eBay has a few as of writing this:

If you thought Bioshock was great, than you must agree that System Shock 2 is among the best of the best of all time. With the Rebirth and texture Upgrade Ozeki mentioned, the age doesn't show as much and it is still very playable. I love it, and it is up there with Fallout 1+2 as my favorite PC games.
If I remember well, the game always has a fear factor because the enemies will spawn again at places you think its safe. Although the original (unpatched) version did that way too much and you always ended up wasting all of your ammunition and had a hard time finding more.
They did the same thing with Bioshock but its more realistic because they appear only a while after you're gone and they're always looking around the stuff you broke or the people you shot down to see if there's any loot. Such great games! :)
Yeah, you pretty much HAVE to play it with the unofficial patches nowadays. :-/
Because of the infinite amount of enemy respawn and the low amount of ammunition (or money to buy some) in the game.
Also, guns break randomly in the unpatched version. Which is horrible. Guns from the future shouldn't break. If you can build a spaceship that goes beyond the speed of light, you can build guns that don't break. O_O
For me System Shock 2 is up there with deus ex for the best game ive ever played. I can still remember vividly rummaging through boxes on shelfs for items and hearing off in the distance "youuurrr voice is noooot ouuurs" id then leave the boxes turn and check the corridor for gouls. Empty? back to the boxes id go. Next thing id head shuffling and more groans. id turn to check the corridor again and BOOM! right in my face would be an enemy, lead bar in hand.
Scared crapless.
