Action RPG (Action Role-Playing Game), also known as ARPG, refers to RPGs (role-playing games) that use direct, real-time, reflex-oriented, action combat systems, instead of the more abstract turn-based or menu-based battle systems.
Something terrible has happened. Your squad is either dead or missing. But there's still hope: a spare pistol that conveniently wasn't lost earlier. Now, about the army of enemies between you and salvation...
A multiplayer mode that pits a large number of players (typically 100) in a winner-takes-all, last-person-standing battle as they scavenge and fight for survival. These games typically take place in a shrinking play zone.
A character who gets washed ashore on some island or other remote place.
The Desert Rangers are a faction that is dedicated to helping various people and communities survive the horror of nuclear post-apocalypse.
A type of gameplay where the main goal is to eat or collect a certain amount of stuff. At the same time, enemies will try to eat the player character.
To elude, escape, or get away from. Some games require players to escape from some people or things to perform some objective or avoid death.
Foraging is the ability to effectively gather food and drink from ones surroundings. Rangers, druids, and elves often excel in this skill.
Who loves you and who do you love?
More effective than any hospital. These games let you heal damage; ranging from a black eye to a gunshot wound, just by having a snack.
A game in which the "seeker" covers his/her eyes while the other players try to find a good hiding spot. It is then up to the seeker to find the hiding players.
A concept where players have the ability to conceal themselves from enemies. Common hiding places in games include closets, lockers, or even just crouching in the shadows.
"Horde" is a type of multiplayer game mode in which players battle co-operatively against increasingly difficult waves of computer-controlled enemies.
Games where you control more than one character, or are a part of a team, and where it is crucial that every team member survives.
A situation where the player-controlled character loses their life immediately. The quickness of that demise is often a stark departure from the balance of power, and sometimes the rules, established by the developers during the rest of the game.
Placing the player in an environment and making them feel alone. Games often use this for atmospheric effect.
Horror games influenced predominantly by the look, feel, and themes of Japanese horror cinema, or non-horror games that allude to the cultural horror aesthetic. J-Horror, or psychological horror, is sometimes classified as a sub-genre of survival horror.
Some game modes don't allow the player to respawn once killed, forcing them to think strategically and to try to stay alive.
A concept where the game must be restarted if you are killed. It is a mechanic found in most arcade games, but the term is usually used in reference to the RPG genre where the mechanic is less common, particularly "roguelike" games as well as strategy games such as Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics where characters die if they are defeated in battle. Often used as a significant plot device.
The act of mimicking a dead body in order to fool an adversary.
The act of acquiring resources for the purpose of building structures and/or unit construction. Resource gathering is a staple of the RTS (Real Time Strategy) genre.
Using stealth often requires the player to accomplish their objective without being detected by enemies. Methods of detection can vary from game to game, and can be based on an enemy's line of sight, how quiet the player is, or even how the player interacts with the environment.
The Stranded are the humans that couldn't get to the Jacinto Plateau during Emergence Day and were left behind. They are considered thieves by the COGs due to their habit of stealing equipment off dead bodies, and they see the COG as "facist pigs" for leaving them behind.
Popularized by franchises such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, these games typically involve a strong implication of danger, vulnerable protagonists, and disturbing monsters.
Some games force you to try and survive as long as possible without losing, or tasks you with surviving a certain number of "waves" of enemies before granting you victory.
When a populated area is overrun by legions of the undead. They are often accompanied by demons or parasitic lifeforms.
Games where weapons break down overtime after extended periods of usage.
Zombies, more accurately called the walking dead, are reanimated corpses who feed on the living, and have become a ubiquitous video game enemy. They often move slowly, but can be deadly in large numbers, which is unfortunately how they tend to travel. Shotgun time!
