2D Characters in a 3D Scenario

Games where the characters are 2D bitmap images (sprites), but the environment and scenarios are made in a 3-Dimensional space. This technique was commonly used on consoles like the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Nintendo DS. Many 90's First-Person Shooters also used this technique. Some used it as a stylistic choice like Paper Mario and Rakugaki Showtime.
Boomer Shooter

A genre of FPS games that are either designed to look and play like 90's shooters or built on game engines from that era.
First-Person Perspective

First-Person is a vantage point that attempts to simulate looking through a game character's eyes. It is most commonly found in first-person shooters, racing games, and visual novels, and to a lesser extent in other genres, such as RPGs, 3D platformers, and adventure games.
id Tech 1

Formerly known as the "Doom Engine", id Tech 1 is the first generation of game engines from id Software.
Source Port

Source port is a general term for any modification created through the use of a game engine's source code, usually with the intent of expanding or improving its functionality in some way. Source ports commonly add features such as high resolution support and compatibility with newer operating systems.
Sprite

A two-dimensional image or animation overlaid into a scene. The foundation of early 2D games, making up everything from props to the player-controlled character.
Steam

A digital distribution service owned by Valve Corporation. Originally created to distribute Valve's own games, Steam has since become the de facto standard for digital distribution of PC games.
