So we have a name for the new movie and it's...mostly cool? Maybe a little lame but I suppose they all are if you look too hard at them. What do you guys think of it? I for one wonder what it means the movie is about

I am a pretty huge SW fan, and the idea that the title of a movie is in any way worth discussing is still really baffling to me.

In a world where a console called the "Wii" isn't even goofy to say anymore, I thought we'd kind of collectively moved past this.

My first thought was "wait the Force was asleep until now?"

My second thought was "didn't they already use that title for a ga-oh wait that was force unleashed"

It's too awkward of a name to say for me. It's within the vein of the other titles in the franchise but it's not snappy enough, it's too long, and 'awakens' is an awkward word to speak and doesn't flow with the other words in a fluent manner. Guess I'll just have to call it TFA.

I mean, it's not terrible it's just pretty generic.

But what does it mean? What's awakening? Was the Force asleep? I don't ask these questions because I think they will have interesting answers, I'm asking because I think this is more a marketing thing than a lore thing. Like, it's a new series, so Paul Marketing's all "Awakening! Get it? Like our series that's new!" That's the part I don't like about the title

@joshwent: I think it merits discussion insofar as the titles have traditionally been directly related to the events of the film (A New Hope [the rebels start winning], Empire Strikes Back, Attack of the Clones etc) and since we know next to nothing about the film it gives some insight.

When you think about it, almost all movie subtitles are pretty dumb. This one is fine, as dumb subtitles go; though I would have preferred "Star Wars VII: Return of the Laser Space Wizards".

Well its a hell of a lot better than Attack of the Clones.

I think it's terrible. Not worse than the prequel titles, but still awful.

Ok. I'll judge the movie when I see the movie. Titles/subtitles mean little to me.

Too bad "A New Hope" was already taken, cause it would be damn fitting.

Man, people don't even try on titles anymore. See: The Dark Knight Rises, Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Force Awakens, etc. That's just lazy shit.

Is this really going to be VII or is this the spinoff? I feel like it needs the word "Episode VII" in it to sound legit.

Meh, the title doesn't really do anything for me, but I'm still super fucking excited to see the movie.

@belegorm: This is Episode VII. The movies never have the episode # in the logo, those are always in the crawl.

It shoulda been "The Franchise Strikes Back."

The "Unleashed" Force Awakens would have been such a better title.

"The Force Awakens" sounds more like the title of a Star Wars video game or EU novel. The past movies titles had an essence of corny 1950's Flash Gordon TV serial about them. Here's a list of Flash Gordon episodes, most of which sound like they could be Star Wars movies.

As flawed as "Attack of the Clones" was, that title is pretty fantastic.

Judging from Abrams' past efforts and his Ted Talk, this one will be full of mystical force mumbo-jumbo "mystery box" crap. I predict a decent enough, character driven movie with a meh plot and a terribly dissatisfying, cliffhangery ending.

@sinusoidal: the force is mystical mumbo jumbo that's why people got pissy when they tried to say "oh no the force is tiny blood aliens". It took all the magic out of it.

The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.

@sinusoidal: Well... yeah. Star Wars is not really science fiction and fits more into the fantasy genre where most things are just magic and mystical. That's kind of what gave Star Wars it's charm in the first place.

I guess the title isn't such a big deal to me. Seems like it fits the tradition with the past movie titles with how vague it sounds.

My initial reaction is that it's a bit wank but, oddly enough, I dont wanna judge it until I've heard the titles for the other two films. For whatever reason I feel uncomfortable damning it without that extra context.

I tell you what, that name ain't no "Phantom Menace," whose title I got more enjoyment from than the actual movie. Still, The Force Awakens is fine. The name actually got me stirring a bit why an idea said as often as the "Force" was hitherto unsaid in any the movie titles.

I was hoping it was going to be JJ Abrams' Star Wars: Imagine All the (Unneeded) Lens Flare.
