Stanley is an exterminator, who first appeared in the Game & Watch game Greenhouse. In this game, he fended off bugs from attacking plants. He later became the protagonist in Donkey Kong 3, defending against bugs again in addition to the eponymous gorilla.
Stanley was never used as a major character again, only appearing in ports/parodies of his roles in Greenhouse and Donkey Kong 3, as well as cameos in a couple of Smash Bros. games.
Due to his fashion choice and opposition to Donkey Kong, it is often rumored that he is a long-lost third Mario brother, or a cousin to Mario and Luigi. No actual evidence exists to support this, however.
