Skyhold is a fortress located in the Frostback Mountains near the Dales which is in Orlais. The original site of the fortress was used for elven rituals during their peak of civilization but what was elven was destroyed to provide the foundation for Skyhold. Ownership has changed hands many times and was eventually abandoned for an unknown amount of years before the Inquisition rediscovered it's location.

There are 3 stages of renovations occurring around Skyhold. During the first visit, few parts are accessible by the Inquisitor due to rubble, structural collapses, sealed doorways, or clutter. After leaving and returning for the first time renovations are underway and several new areas are now accessible. The remainder of the game stays in the second stage. Renovations are complete after the main story quest is finished and all areas are accessible by the Inquisitor.

Skyhold also has 3 possible upgrades available that can be found on the Requisition Table. The Inquisitor will have to choose between two options per upgrade but they are mostly cosmetic in nature. The upgrades are:

    • Courtyard - You choose between an Infirmary or a Practice Ground. The Infirmary will place a new building next to the quartermaster's office where the practice ground is near the stairs leading to the throne, both purely cosmetic.
    • Skyhold Garden - You choose between a Utilitarian Garden or a Chantry. This is the only upgrade that isn't merely cosmetic. The garden allows you to grow 6 plants once you have found the seeds of a given plant where the Chantry will collect gold for you.
    • Watchtower - Choose between a Mage or Templar Tower. Purely cosmetic and what type of NPCs fill the tower.

In addition to the upgrades, the Inquisitor can also customize many things about Skyhold in the crafting area. Again it is merely cosmetic and the customization options can either be found in the areas around the world or purchased at various shops. The Throne is similar but also can be upgraded in various forms which are dropped randomly from the war table.

Once the Inquisitor reaches level 10, a mission on the War Table can be completed which will allow the Inquisitor to select a specialization after finding the correct materials. Their location is on the battlements above the stables.

In the atrium where Solas is located, he will depict events in the Inquisition's history in a fresco style painting. Each panel will represent a decision the Inquisitor had to make (i.e. siding with the Templars or Mages in the beginning of the game).
