The gameplay is based on Gremlin's 1977 arcade hit Depthcharge, the player controls a Swedish transport ship, the TBPS-200 no. 215 on the top of the screen, moved left and right with the arrow keys and armed with fore and aft depth charge launchers (fired with the 1 and 2 keys respectively), which must be dropped on submarines in the sea below. Since the depth charges fall slowly timing is required, and the player must avoid mines and torpedoes fired from the submarines. There is a set amount of submarines per stage, and the player advances to the next stage once the screen has been cleared of subs.

The original game was released as SinkSub for Windows in 1993, it was an 16 bit program for Windows 3.1. With Windows 95 came a new 32 bit version, where the shareware release was simply titled Sink Sub, and a registered copy was titled SinkSub Pro. In 2008 it was ported to iPhone and iPod Touch under the name SinkSub - Deep Sweep.
