Overview
Shura no Mon ("Asura's Gate") is a karate strategy game based on the martial arts manga of the same name, which Kodansha ran in their Monthly Shounen Magazine between 1987-1997. It was exclusive to the Sega Mega Drive in Japan, though an unrelated Shura no Mon tie-in game was later released for PlayStation in 1998.
The protagonist is Tsukumo Mutsu, a young martial artist and the most recent generational master of the Mutsu Enmei Ryu style of karate, who enters a fighting tournament to test his skills against various other types of martial arts.
Gameplay
The combat in Shura no Mon is menu-driven, as the player and their opponent maneuver themselves around to prepare for attacks and counterattacks. When attacking, the player can choose the most likely attack to land from their menu, ideally when they've built up enough power. When the opponent attacks, the player can choose an appropriate block or counter from the same menu. Opponents get more difficult and unpredictable as the game progresses, with a variety of martial arts styles.
