Old Games: Super NT Super Stream

Not that we need an excuse to hang out and play some SNES games, but the release of the Super NT seems like as good a reason as any!

You've found yourself at the base of Giant Bomb's Old Games.

Also, I couldn't help but grin at both @brad and @unastrike independently thinking that Uniracers was built with the SuperFX chip, then both saying, "Wait...maybe I was thinking of Stunt Race FX". I remember being super confused about what did and didn't have the FX chip around the time those games were released, too.

Would love one of these if I had the cash for it although the last thing my wallet needs is to start collecting these old games again.

I had no idea about the Earthbound copy protection! Played that a ton growing up. Apparently the game will delete your saves when you're at the final boss if it detects that it's a pirated cartridge?! Still super bummed I sold that along with all of my other SNES games years ago. Otherwise I would probably be picking one of these up.

Trying out scalers but also turning on scanlines seems like a crazy person thing to do.

Is it just me or does the Super NT seem... not great? I understand those carts were old and grimy but the consistency with which they were having problems getting the games to run seemed off.

I can't recall what stream it was but Jeff and Brad have had basically this exact same conversation about F-Zero and Green Day before.

@jeff The reason you kept jumping in Mario Kart on Rainbow Road is because they hide yellow ramps over the yellow blocks. Every time you jumped when you didn't mean to? That was you hitting a ramp. You can see them if you look closer. Your controller is fine... not to mention the manual jump in that game is lower than the kind of jump you get when you hit a ramp.

FYI you can use Super Scope on any display, not just CRTs. Remember the IR receiver you have to plug in to the SNES and set under/over the TV? That's what picks up the gun, the gun does not scan the TV.

That also means you have to be standing in one spot to use it and never move, else you have to re-calibrate the gun again. Very annoying. I prefer the Zapper because it just works, and if you move around, no big deal.

Then again you need a very low latency LCD and XRGB3 or similar no-lag converter to use the Zapper, because the Zapper only allows for 16ms discrepancy in reading the TV screen. It does work, with a caveat, it may not work with games that use scanline timing for positioning (like Gumshoe) as opposed to big blocks of black/white that flash on the screen (Duck Hunt).
