Wait, does this have a set player character? Brad never mentioned any kind of character creator, but did seem to reference you playing as a specific guy. A bit of a bummer if that is the case, always was the primary missing ingredient in stuff like The Surge and Lords of the Fallen to me.

Excellent! I really hoped to see Brad's opinion on this, definitely didn't expect it after no mention on the Bombcast. Heard the Embargo was weird or something

Sekiro seems to be going for something a lot less different than the usual souls stuff. It looks more like a traditional videogame. More combat music throughout the levels, stealth meters, stealth attacks, bigger emphasis on story and cut scenes as well. Most of the loot seems to be general consumables rather than new armor and weapons. There is a proper jump button instead of a sprinting jump/roll. Also no stamina meter.

I think this is more of a traditional character action game than a Souls-like RPG.

@fisk0: You can't have a character creator in the game, otherwise the game can't be called Sekiro. It would be like if Halo had a character creator and you could turn the Halo into a Square. Just make no stinkin' sense.

Shinobi Souls more like it.

I mean, the Halo franchise has had multiple protagonists over the years, really don't see why they couldn't have a character creator in there either. Is Sekiro some kind of historical character? Every result I get trying to look it up just links to the game, in the quick look Brad just said he was called "Wolf", which could be generic and gender neutral like Sheppard in Mass Effect, but the hell do I know.

I'm just saying it looks like it has enough of the Souls trappings in there for me to miss the omission of the part I enjoyed the most.

The prosthetic arm attachments remind me of Witcher signs with your choice of offense, defense, or stun. And as a Bionic Commando fan, I’m hoping the flame attachment is Sekiro’s wife. Because her love cannot be extinguished.

Also, that area in the beginning of this QL looks like the beginning of the skeleton place in Demon's Souls. Grinded out a lot of souls there. :)

Well this sure looks like a From software game.

Haven't been able to get into any game lately, but this looks very cool, so I think I might just cave in and buy it...

The lack of armor, weapons, stats, and only being able to really kill things with parry kinda is a bummer

Guess I'll point out that I already have it preordered for PC as it looks beautiful and I like SOME challenge, but I never played bloodborne (despite owning a ps 4 and a ps 4 pro) and fell off of Dark Souls after 2 but this looks pretty cool.

Why wasn't he using the whirlwind when there was you know, the 5 enemies? I mean, go big or go home muchacho!

No stamina, no MP component? Hell, yes, I'm in! I enjoyed Dark Souls, but it wasn't a religious experience for me like some other people. I got fairly into Bloodborne but only after it was free on PS Plus. I also hate the invasion aspect of those games as well as boss fights intended for you to do with other players.

It seemed like Brad was making it harder for himself by being so defensive. Obviously I haven't played it so I'm just guessing based on this short video but it looked like it only took 3-4 hits to break their posture and you don't have any stamina this time. Seems like maybe you need to be rushing in more and being more aggressive instead of waiting for them to make the first move all the time. I get why he would play that way since that was a good way to play the old From games.

I'm way into this, having loved both Soul games and Tenchu games of the past; this seems like everything I could have wanted, and then some.

I'm inclined to play this in the original Japanese due to the setting and the developer recommendation, but at the same time, I remember how fucking excellent the English voice acting has been in the previous iterations. Man.. I might just end up playing through the game in both just to experience it.

Hmm, as a not-so-big fan of the Souls games, this looks more interesting than I was expecting. I'm actually a little surprised they retained as much as they did, though - I thought they'd either go full-on Dark Souls in Japan or full-on different game. It'll be interesting to see how that combat system pans out later in the game, from these early guys it seems kind of one note (break guard > death blow).

As someone who's a big fan of the Souls style games, I love how different this seems. It's fascinating how you can see the evolution of their design from Demon's Souls to Sekiro.

This game looks incredible, but I don't know that I'm good enough to play it.

Did they touch on performance at all? Seems like the PC version is available to the press but yet another lowest common denominator PS4 quicklook.

@barrock: From what I've heard it's just yet another case of people over-exaggerating the difficulty because they haven't figured out how to play the game yet. It's still the same kinda tactical approach to combat, so it's all about learning the enemies and figuring out the flow of combat.

@heelbill: Unfortunately not in detail. They were playing on PS4 Pro and he said it was fine.

I don't think he's a historical character. More that FromSoftware wanted to take a break from the freeform minimalist storytelling structre of their last five Souls/Borne titles. They've designed an actual character with a face and distinctive voice and a backstory instead of a random aimless adventurer like in Dark Souls.

I'm excited to see how traditional narrative storytelling pans out for them.

I thought all the previews I'd seen did a good job of showing the game, but this really nailed how intense and different the combat will be. Each interaction is basically a layer of puzzles, and any one mistake changes everything. It's fucking badass.

Dark Souls' combat was much more of a game of how to lure just one or two enemies over to you, and then master the dance by learning their abilities and timing. If you fuck up getting that Black Knight and end up with some shield dudes alongside him, you're done. One hit will wreck your stamina and you're as good as gone. It's all really hard stuff, but that's kind of it, isn't it?

Sekiro looks similar but it adds a few new elements, too. Taking away things like stats and stamina make me think that it's going to be super hard. You can't just grind souls and pump your numbers up.

I bet all the people that do SL1 runs in Dark Souls are fucking drooling over this game.

I gotta point out that I absolutely LOVE how Brad is talking about how this game takes place in a more grounded feudal Japan and tries to stick to having enemies be more realistic in nature, right as a 15 foot tall giant wanders into frame and swings a massive club.

This looks incredible. Between this and DMC5, I feel like they are making games just for me right now.

Wow this kind of mobility in a souls-esque looking game, (I mean that aesthetically) is so strange looking it’s almost jarring.
