I really love the look of the box. It doesn't even try to pretty up NES-era graphic design.

Those controller cable lengths are pretty short.

Needs a puppy alongside it for true comparison, we don't know how big that hand is.

But how do they fit 30 WHOLE NES GAMES in such a tiny box???

@cramsy: reminds me of something you'd buy for $10 on an endcap at a Target...which is probably what they're going for. I think this is indicative of how Nintendo has handled their classic titles in even the Virtual Console: half assed.

yup totally. seems to do what it needs to do. 'terrible' seems like a bit of exaggeration haha

looking at the extreme basicness and or bad design of most nes games it's still completely incredible what nintendo was able to do in the 3 mario games.

@ehhh: Yeah, even SMB (1)'s quality taken against a huge majority of NES releases is just mind-blowing. 3 is nearly unfathomable.

Always tough to see FF1 get skipped over (Save states would make for an enormous quality of life improvement) but this coverage really helps answer a lot of questions.

I am very surprised they kept that take. Holy shit dudes. As someone born slightly later ('89) I experienced almost zero NES gaming and went straight to the SNES. Is this worth getting for someone with almost no nostalgia for 8 bit?

I love FFX but listening to Jeff mocking it was the best.

I think it's a shame the European version doesn't have a 50hz mode for nostalgia reasons.. I mean this is aimed at nostalgia, so you are gonna sell these games in a state that are way different than they remembered?

You can get the Twin Famicom HDMI modded, "only" about 200 dollars for the kit and installation.

Never before noticed that they try to do a very primitive parallax effect in excitebike, you can see the bleachers move slightly faster than the foreground track.

Whoa, the top of that box is just like the Switch logo but an NES. Wonder if that will factor into their VC stuff on the Switch.

@danryckert In case you're still curious, the sub-weapon energy in Ninja Gaiden is the character 忍, which is the 'nin' in 'ninja' (忍者). On its own the character means patience, self-restraint, and forbearance.

Is it possible you played Ninja Gaiden 3 (though it sounds like you're describing Ninja Gaiden 2) at the 1990 Nintendo World Championships? The year matches up and they toured 29 U.S. cities before the finals in Dallas, I wouldn't be surprised if they did a Kansas City regional.

I competed in the Chicago regional and they absolutely had pre-release games there to play, my friend and I beat Double Dragon 2 on the show floor before the game was even out. Also they were demoing the NES Power Pad and I remember a kid fell and broke his arm playing it.

No, Jeff! Don't give two characters (OR MORE!?) the same name in Final Fantasy 1! I had to restart my FF1 playthrough way back in the day because of this grievous oversight, after hours of struggling to determine who was who.

This was after I struggled for hours trying to get to the Temple of Friends (just roll with it, ok). A team of four Black Belts got the job done, but once I discovered how to equip items I restarted with AAAA the Fighter, AAAA the Thief, a Red Mage, and a White Mage, and went on my way and got farther than I ever did, to the volcano dungeon.

Those were interesting times.

Tecmo Bowl carries the NFLPA license, so it originally had city names (but not team names) and player names.
