Some (lots) of the shots in ME1 look *considerably* better than anything in Andromeda. Awesome game, great playthrough Alex and Vinny, best ER.

Mass Effect 1 is so strong in the final hours that it makes me forget how god-awful the combat and Mako parts are.I love the story and the characters, but the shooting accuracy and controls were never where they needed to be, and all the Mako parts were really tedious and boring. Of course what they were attempting with this game really blew me away, but I am so thankful for the refinements to these aspects in the later games. (Not looking forward to the scanning minigame or the gameover dodging though).

I was also really surprised by how minor a role some of the characters have, especially Joker. In my mind they are all main characters in the story, so it was weird to see how little dialogue was in this game. There was also a lot less dialogue with the crew in general. I could have sworn there was new dialogue and stories to be had after every mission, but I guess that really gets expanded in the later games.

Overall I'm just really happy that Alex enjoyed the game, and I share Vinny's excitement at starting ME2. I'm pretty confident the story will hold up, but I hope the "refinements" to the combat and gameplay are as big a change as I remember. If anything the big shift is from an overarching narrative to interpersonal character stories and vignettes, but I think that will really appeal to Alex.

See you next time everyone! o7

Let's see how quickly Alex adapts to ME2 Vanguard, which is nothing like how he played this one.

Loved this series, even though Vinny drove me crazy sometimes with misremembering systems and story. Looking forward to the further adventures of Shep Shep!

I'm so hype(rspace)d! Thank you, Alex. Thank you, Vinny. And look, I realize we're a long way off, but throw this in a time capsule, when you get to ME3, please, make sure you have the Extended Cut dlc. It really helps. Granted, ALL the dlc for 2 and 3 are pretty darn good. And now, while this downloads, I'm off to dust off my 360, which has all said dlc content waiting for me to start another Shepard trilogy. This series has been MY. . . Catalyst. "I should go."

Ehhh. That kind of depends on what Alex wants out of the series. Personally, I would encourage him to play through ME3 with none of the DLC or Extended Cut first, because I think it's important from a historical perspective to understand what all the fuss was about at the time.

I don't think people who only played that game with the EC and DLCs will ever really comprehend what pissed fans off so much. Forget not "getting a happy ending." That original ending was more or less incomprehensible.

@therealturk: I get what you're saying, and as a big fan of ME, I'm glad I played it in said order. However, because of some of the breaks in logic of the original ending, and I mean things like no scene of the Normandy picking up crew members, (not to mention Joker just leaving with no conflict) and then they magically appear later, these are just frustrating plot holes after such a long journey. So, how about this, Alex (and hopefully you're not reading this for spoilers sake), if you get to ME3 and know there is a high chance you'll play through it again, then maybe ignore dlc. But if you feel once is enough, and have no intention of playing through it again, then I say experience the best the trilogy has to offer, which is with dlc. At least the Ext Cut, which, again, is more about fixing narrative plot holes. Granted, Leviathan laid some relatively decent groundwork for the ending. What's that? Did someone mention Indoctrination Theory? Lol, sorry, I couldn't help myself.

My only complaint so far is that it's not coming out quick enough! Thanks for the laughs and goofs Alex and Vinny. Hoping to see / hear you back sooner rather than later in 2019.

Great play-through guys, looking forward to the continuing adventures of Shep Shep!

I cannot believe Alex saved the council.

I was more eager for those jerkoffs to bite it than to get at Saren

Thanks Alex and Vinny for the first season of Alex Effect (lol). Greatly looking forward to ME2, which goes PLACES. Glad Alex saved the Council, I feel canonically it's what Shep Shep would have done. ME1 still my favourite in the series, despite the big weaknesses it has. ME2 is the better playing game, but ME1 does a great job of establishing the universe, races and characters and making you care about them.

Can't wait for ME2 - definitely the best one of the series. While I was disappointed how they reduced the RPG elements in ME2, the overall increase in quality was more than enough to balance the scale. And like Vinny, I loved the focus on the personal stories. I had very few issues with ME2 from what I can remember: mainly the surveying minigame which I ended up dropping and used cheats for resources (same in ME3 for galactic readiness or whatever) and the lack of platonic friendship option with Jack. Still, it's undoubtedly one of the best games I've ever played (top 5, I'd say).

@reaveybeach: you'd be the first person in like 8 years to ever speak negatively about Mass Effect 2...by all accounts ME2 is a vastly superior game in the entire trilogy, better characters, better storylines, more intriguing narrative, more important and compounding decisions as well as just fine tuned controls and tightened up mechanics...you are high as a kite if you think ME2 is anything less than ME1.

@professorx86: BETTER CHARACTERS??? BETTER STORYLINES??? MORE INTRIGUING NARRITIVES??? YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS. ME2 is shlocky hollywood bullshit. It has the worst story of the entire trilogy and turned into a generic cover shooter. The story is about shooting bugmen that look like they're straight out of a Power Rangers episode because they're trying to make a giant baby Terminator. But hey, Miranda's ass I guess? You haven't been on the internet enough these past 8 years to realize that the majority these days prefers ME1.

God this took me way longer to get through than I anticipated but thanks Vinny and Alex for going through this. I love ME, the only downside to this play though is that Alex just got so comfortable with using the pistol, it's all he used and made combat sections a bit dull to watch. He just seemed so disinterested in using the games systems that I'm sure he'll be someone who enjoys the lack of RPG in ME2.

Good watch, I never got through the original ME.

I played ME2 with no context of ME1...but I played ME2 so long ago now like when it first came out. I'm excited to keep binge watching this during the COVID-19 quarantine!

I know I'm quite late here but thanks for completing Mass Effect 1, Vinny and Alex. I forgive you for never investigating the Electronics skill even if you drove the Mako to every Point of Interest in the galaxy :)

It is my favorite ME game but the story made much more sense after completing ME3 last year because I better understood the scope of the story. That first game had that special "Roddenberry" optimistic sci-fi theme that I though the other 2 games lost. I did experience some bugs I think with the Vigil exposition dump so I might not have gotten all the info at the time.
