@foreveralice: I don't think pissy is the right approach. Lots of paying subscribers here that really loved the way GOTY was handled in the past. Totally valid to vocalize that this 2nd year of going through impressions again wasn't entertaining to them.

I think my main issue with this format is that it's not exclusive enough to give very in depth discussions on each game, but not exhaustive enough to give more niche games the shine they deserve. Especially with the "negative" categories removed, its frustrating to have 10 minutes talking about WWE 2K20 sucking while not talking at all about Pathologic 2, for example. Obviously with such a small team you can't cover every game (especially in depth), which is why (if this format were to continue), I feel it would be a lot better if everyone put in a shortlist of like, the top 20-30 games for them and just covering those games with more detailed discussion. I'd be sad not to have Dragon Quest Builders 2 discussed in such a format (assuming nobody would've submitted it), but I don't feel like 2 minutes about a game no one really cared about is worth diluting the discussion of games they do.

Huh. No articles to go with these this year or am I missing something?

Abby: "No, I'm not a theater kid. That said, I loved this Shakespeare game!" Loved that. I forgot about Astrologaster!

(but really, I would have guessed that too, particularly with how dramatic the last Dearest Abby was!)

During the conversation about MK11, they subtitle it in the video as "MORTAL KOMBAT 11 (ELEVEN)" and for the briefest of moments, I thought it said "MORTAL COMBAT CLEVELAND".

I'd play that game.

Its probably been said, but in Days Gone, the wedding quote everyone loves to laugh at- if you have actually played the game, the characters have a conversation about how lame it is when bikers say that at weddings, beforehand. Its a part of the joke.

Wouldn't it be way more interesting to just.. go more indepth on the games that people do want to champion?

Yep. This 'year in review' seems such a weird fit for the site - Giant Bomb is a site where which games get discussed through the year, is based on what the editors are interested in. So quite a lot of games get skipped, which can be frustrating, but that's the nature of the beast.

Why would you then pretend you're interested in all the games that came out..? I get the idea that some of those skipped games can be discussed and championed, but you'd still make a choice which games you really want to discuss.

I don't miss overly negative discussions, but I do miss passion. I'd rather have some negativity and a lot of passion, than what we have now.

Guess they can't see the hypocrisy in it, but it's pretty disappointing, coming from someone who has been a subscriber since 2013. This isn't something completely 100% related to just this GOTY stuff specifically, just something I've noticed over the years. Some sort of strange "critics that can't take critique" situation.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. To me it comes across a bit as feeling they're "too cool for school".

This was quite painful, if we are just going to have people who told us during the year they hated a certain game recap that with no real counter argument what is the point it's just quite dull

Judging by the thumbnail, I always suspected Jeff could telepathically levitate video game accessories!

I have been looking for Vinny's 1984 quote "we've always been at war with" for several days now. First I remembered that Vinny made a funny book quote, then I stumbled on the specific quote but not what it pertained to. I thought it was related to GOTY discussions and then finally it dawned on me that it must have been about EA rebooting Anthem.
