Overview
A skilled knight apart of Loghain's army, Cauthrien is a recurring character in Dragon Age: Origins.
Dragon Age: Origins
Cauthrien is first seen amidst the battle of Ostagar, during when Loghain orders his troops to retreat and abandon King Cailen. Cauthrien is noticeably shocked at the order, but nonetheless complies.
From here she will next show up once The Warden has recruited all of their allies to stop the Blight, and has now travelled to the capital of Ferelden, the City of Denerim. She is often seen at the side of Loghain, and will first be fought when the The Warden attempts to save Queen Anora--whom Loghain had locked up--and Cauthrien attempts to arrest The Warden for the murder of Arl Rendon Howe.
Though while it is technically possible to win this fight, it is exceptionally difficult and is in fact arguably the most difficult boss battle in the game. As such, the player is intended to lose, to which The Warden and Alistair will be captured as Loghain has deemed The Grey Wardens traitors. If The Warden wins, they will thusly not be captured and Ser Cauthrien is killed, though there is otherwise no reward--beyond her sword, which can still be collected later on--or story alterations.
If Cauthrien is still alive by this point, she will finally be encountered outside the doors to the main hall, where the Landsmeet between the Nobles is about to take place. The player may once again fight her, and will have to ultimately kill her. Though with enough persuasion she may instead confess that she feels Loghain is not whom he once was, and will step aside letting The Warden pass.
