Overview
Prior to working for
Cerberus Rupert Gardner lived with his family, working along the frontier colonies, mining
element zero. When
batarian raiders attacked, Gardner lost what he described as “everything”, the exact details of his loss are unknown but it is likely he lost family members, his home, his possessions, his job or a combination of these things. After these events Gardner joined Cerberus in order to “make a difference”. He admits openly to
Commander Shepard that he is proud to be a member of Cerberus and that he believes the Alliance and the
Council have “their heads buried so deep up their butt-puckers they can’t see squat”.
Aboard the Normandy SR-2 Gardner can be found in the cafeteria on the second deck. His official title is Mess Sergeant, however he performs a wide number of duties around the ship including everything from cooking to plumbing. While unable to fight Gardner says that he is willing to help in any way possible.
When Shepard first takes command of the Normandy two crewmembers in the cafeteria can be heard complaining about the quality of Gardner’s food, however an assignment from Gardner can be accepted to obtain higher quality food supplies. If Shepard completes the assignment by bringing him food supplies from the Citadel the crewmembers in the cafeteria can be heard giving appreciation for Gardner’s meals. Engineers Kenneth Donnelly and Gabriella Daniels will also comment upon Gardner’s cooking.
Like the rest of the crew of the Normandy SR-2 Gardner is kidnapped by the collectors in their raid on the ship and depending on whether or not Shepard chooses to complete any side missions before pursuing the collectors Gardner will either be saved and continue his normal duties aboard ship or be processed by the collectors.
