Hitman 2 Review

4
  • XONE
  • PS4

This sequel offers plenty of reasons to revisit the world of assassination, whether you're an experienced hitman or just trying out the fiber wire for the first time.

Editor's note: This review was originally conducted in a podcast format, available as a video above or right here as an audio file. A summary of the review follows.

No Caption Provided

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who already know the glee of 2016's Hitman reboot, and those who have yet to experience IO Interactive's wildly entertaining world of absurdist assassination. Fortunately, Hitman 2 is easy to recommend to both groups, owing to a big list of necessary improvements to the formula, a smart integration with the previous game, and another big pack of great new maps. There's really never been a better time to get into this unique, quirky franchise.

The core of Hitman 2 is exactly the same as in the first game: you roam around massive clockwork levels swarming with hundreds of characters, all interacting with each other and carrying out their own routines, as you plan dozens of ridiculous ways to bump off your targets (quietly or not). But Hitman 2 is chock-full of incremental changes and additions that make it a much better playing game on the whole. Some intelligent interface tweaks help clarify abstract information like compromised disguises, off-limits areas, and scripted murder opportunities and make them much easier to parse. New gameplay features, like tall foliage that lets you hide in plain sight and a briefcase you can use to smuggle conspicuously illegal items around, give you more options to devise creative strategies. And in what must be one of the most generous decisions made by a developer in recent history, owners of the first game can import all of its content into the new package for free and replay it with all the new features--and newcomers can add all that content to the sequel for a measly 20 bucks. Seeing two whole games' worth of Hitman encapsulated in one tidy package is a special kind of satisfying.

Hitman 2's locations cover almost as much exotic ground as those in the first game, from a high-tech Miami speedway to a drug cartel's jungle compound, suburban Anytown USA and a secret island meeting of billionaires who not-so-secretly run the world. At five full-sized maps and one smaller one, there's more than enough content here to get your money's worth. And while this sequel maintains the goofy, totally-serious-but-not-really tone of the series, I have to give Hitman 2 credit for making me genuinely care about the story in a Hitman game. The first game raised a ton of questions about illuminati-type groups and shadowy rogue agents without providing many answers, but the sequel makes good on that residual suspense with a taut international cat-and-mouse thriller that not only develops the characters of Agent 47 and his handler Diana Burnwood, but also provides some closure to the first game's mysteries. In the course of making good on those lingering plot threads, it also raises the stakes to such a degree that seeing the conclusion of the whole thing might be the number one reason I want a Hitman 3. That's not a sentence I ever expected to write.

No Caption Provided

This is a great package in total, though Hitman 2 feels just slightly rougher around the edges than its predecessor. The production is a little less polished and elaborate, with cutscenes composed of rudimentary still images compared to the full-fat CG treatment the story got in the first game. That's made more noticeable since both games' cinematics are housed side-by-side in the same menu. There's a little less map content to work with overall compared to the previous game's six full-sized locations and two sizable training maps, but the five new maps are gigantic, and Hitman 2 does come up with a handful of new variations on the standard objective of just killing all your targets that help to freshen things up a bit. And while the game offers a couple of supplementary modes with Sniper Assassin, where you attempt to take out targets at a wedding from a lofty perch with a scoped rifle, and Ghost--a head-to-head "beta" multiplayer mode that has players racing to get kills, which doesn't feel like it plays to Hitman's loose, anything-goes strengths--this ancillary content isn't really the reason you come to a Hitman game. Luckily, the first limited-time "elusive target" starring none other than Sean Bean is a great sign for more of the free post-release support that defined the first game, and there are DLC releases planned down the line to provide more of those great locations.

Those complaints don't amount to much when you step back and look at how well the Hitman formula has matured in this sequel and just how much content IO has crammed into this single package. The developer's uncertain future under Square Enix made a fair number of headlines a while back, before IO went independent and became the sole master of Agent 47's destiny. The fact that Hitman 2 turned out as well as it did in spite of that business turmoil is a great sign for the future of the franchise, and we should all be fortunate enough to get to play another one of these games a couple of years from now.

Interesting that you describe ghost mode as not being "loose and anything-goes," because I had the exact opposite experience.

In a regular Hitman map I move slowly and make every attempt to not be seen or heard; Basically I play the game as explicitly designed. In ghost mode however, it's a race, so I'm ignoring everyone and everything that isn't giving me the fastest direct line to getting a kill before my opponent. This causes me to essentially end a ghost map with half the NPCs either unconscious or chasing after me in a huff.

The rest of the review I absolutely agree with, bar the cutscene complaint but that's just subjective.

Thanks Brad!

I guess this means Red Dead will be GOTY. -_-

I don't see Jeff hard backing anything specific, even Tetris, sadly.

I really don't see anyone besides Jeff who would push back against Red Dead being a 'perfect' game/GOTY sadly.

I fucking hate these new summary reviews so much. Like I get it, you’re barely a text site anymore, but this just fucking sucks. Y’all employ two of the best writers in the industry in Brad and Alex and their talents are going to waste and it’s wack.

Jeff despises Red Dead. He'd back anything over it the same way he did with Zelda last year, even though he was actually more positive on that than RDR. In fact, there seems to be enough pushback that I don't think they'll be able to come to an agreement on it.

But also...who cares? If you don't like the game and they name it their GOTY, that doesn't mean you have to suddenly like the game. Being at the top of the site's overall list doesn't make something the best.

@iamjohn: It's definitely a bit of a bummer, but it's not that bad. The review summaries still house all of the information you'd want. The only thing you lose out on is the character and emotion from something like Alex's No Man's Sky review or Dan's Breath of the Wild review.

At least from the text summary sounds to me like it still has a place at GOTY conversations. It lost a star from lowered production values and the fact that the two new modes they added are both bad. It's still Hitman, and it still rules and there's so much good that can be brought up in defense of it it'll make the list.

As for overall GOTY I'd like to see one of the indie games get it. Into the Breach, Dead Cells or Celeste. So far I'm favoring Celeste, though by year's end I'm expecting Smash Ultimate to have overtaken it personally.

I hope Hitman 2 does well enough for IOI that they, now that they are clear of both Square and any shake-ups caused by the split, can make a fantastic Hitman 3.

@synthesis_landale: I would be VERY surprised if RDR2 managed to pull off GOTY at this point. Listen to the most recent Beastcast to see what I mean, but I could see God of War, Spider-Man, Blops 4 or Dead Cells taking it. There are people who love it for sure, but opinions are changing quite a bit, to say the least.

Bought the Gold Edition on Xbox the day it was available for preorder. Have put about 20+ hours into the game so far and I'm only up to the Miami level as I've mainly been replaying the older levels to get the unlocks/level 20 mastery/achievements all over again and am loving all the new gameplay mechanics and little updates and tweaks they've made to the older levels. There is so much content in this package and just like the first game it's something I'll be coming back to over and over again for the rest of 2018 and most of 2019 as they add in all their DLC, and I can't wait to consume it all.

Only that it's a paragraph or two shorter than some people think it should be. They're grumpy that the video "review" is up front, and assume it means the written portion is half-assed. What wonderful fans.

@synthesis_landale: Jeff and Dan both hate RDR2 (Jeff's been vocal about it, and Dan actively hates RDR2 as of the most recent Beastcast). I doubt it or Destiny 2 will make GOTY, not with so many very strong releases this year.

RDR2 ain't perfect, either.

@nameredacted:

Man, every time I hear people talk about how perfect RDR2 is I feel like I was tricked and bought a different game. It's good, don't get me wrong. But very very far from perfect. There's enough minor issues that turn into nuisances in that game that by the end I just wanted to see the story through and wasn't really having fun with it.

And, unlike Jeff I LOVED RDR1, I like slow guns, and the western setting. It's like RDR2 actively tries to stop me from having fun.

I always enjoy reading your articles, Brad. But, I should disagree. I don't think this package is great (not that anyone cares what I think).

Consider this, HItman's reboot has had at least three re-releases up to this point, it was published by WB and what we get is more of the same with impressive ambiance architecture and clever NPC placement.

I would still prefer MGSV. A game this very website criticized for not having enough content. Both games original retail prices are 60$.

I think Hitman is fun but, is overall an inferior stealth game due to weaker AI patterns and lack of gameplay choice/freedom of interaction within missions.

Still love this game. Heck, I've loved this game since Codename 47...well with the exclusion of Absolution(I think we have Kane and Lynch to blame for that). I think overall it's quite a bit more polished from the previous Hitman. Really though it's just more Hitman. which is good.

I have yet to have found time to play the first one, which I own. Definitely don't have time to play this one right now, but I'm really glad they exist, and hope to get to them soon. And I really feel IO Interactive deserves all the best. The fact that they went back and incorporated all the new tweaks into the old game has sold me on buying the new one now, even though I probably won't even play it until after it goes on sale. IO's recent creative performance reminds me of CD Projekt Red, and the industry could definitely use more developers like them. So I figure I'll show my support with my dollars.

Not sure if this was made clear in the reviews, but if you already own Hitman1 on steam, you can download Hitman2 without any further purchase and get access to all the Hitman1 content running on the new engine, new unlocks, etc. So if you want to get a taste of the changes to the engine, UI, menu, etc, you can do that without spending $60. You don't get access to this Hitman 2 levels, multiplayer modes, etc.

@crazybagman: @matthewgm: Come on, like you don’t know exactly what I mean. The text is not the focus here. The main review is the podcast/video and the text is meant to accompany it for people that don’t have the time or don’t want to watch it. And that’s totally their right to do but it sucks when they have people on staff that are great writers first and foremost. And I do feel it’s half-assed compared to the most comprehensive or criticism-minded reviews they’ve done. Sorry you don’t agree, but I’m also hard pressed to see how I’m wrong here. The text is not the focus, and it’s easy to see how it’s not the focus because this is the direction they’ve explicitly stated they’ve been going in for a while and the text here reflects that. Cool that you don’t mind that, but I don’t think it makes me “grumpy” that I like reading things and the written reviews are now essentially secondary to what amounts to a Bombcast discussion clip.

I'm up to play this, probably next year though when the price has come down a bit given I've got loads else to play at the moment. It's interesting to hear you can play the Hitman 1 levels in Hitman 2, even if you don't buy anything in Hitman 2.

@s5n8k3: What does WB being a distributing publisher for the game (just like Witcher 3 in NA) have to do with anything? And have you actually seen more than a minute of 2016/2018's gameplay, if the mass variety in challenges, dialogue, and kill methods somehow rate as a "lack of gameplay/freedom of interaction" in your book, what exactly do think the games should add? Don't even know why I'm wasting time replying to someone who's obviously played very little of the game/probably still upset MGSV lost GOTY/thinks Hitman TM is Absolution, but just wanted to say thanks for the laugh mate.

Love this game, and Brad's review is spot on from what I've played so far. I didn't make a lot of time for the first one when it came out, but after finishing RDR2 I'm ready to give this my full attention. Being able to replay those old levels within the 2nd game is such a great way to do it, I'll be shocked if I don't end up with 100+ hours out of this package.

@iamjohn: You are absolutely right in that they are not the main focus anymore and you most certainly have the right to not enjoy that because you prefer more elaborately written reviews instead. It does make you at least seem grumpy for continuing to belabor this point in the comments when you yourself admittedly know that is the direction they've taken and are not going back anytime soon. It is what it is.

As for Hitman, seems about right. More of the same is fine but you won't get the same punch out of a release when your big selling points are small tweaks that perfect the formula. As a hardcore Hitman fan that has been with the series from the start I'm kinda ok with waiting a bit to get this.

This "video review" seems awfully low-effort for a video; it would hardly lose anything if it were just audio. Which might be the point but....

Also the gang should try ghost mode against like-skilled players. It rewards "spicy" play more than it punishes it, though it does favour the player with more level knowledge pretty heavily

I can tell it isn't going to matter, but I feel bad for what is seeming waning and probably in time the cessation of the Full written review. I considered it a mark of professionalism and writing skill, to analyze and rate a video game. Now it is all shuffled off as opinion. The first video 'only' review that happened a while back just seemed lazy and escaping this part off critiquing a Video game, absolutely no offence to whoever in particular first did it this way. Really, a bunch of guys talking about a game with one leading the table.

I'll accept that at some point I suspect even the written summary will become superfluous, here on this site at least. But thinking back for the years I have been here, it feels something of quality is being lost.

That being said, Hitman is probably game of the year for me.

@deadstar: Don't apologize for your opinion! But I'm not saying having a video is bad. I'm saying this video in particular is bad.

Compare it to what this site used to call "video review" (e.g. Arkham City, FWIW the new site makes it easy to find these *if* you know about the "year" dropdown menu). Where clearly more effort was put into actually making a video.

Now that kind of review is what a lot of outlets do these days so I get the desire to do something that isn't that. I just think the "watch us chat about this game" format may be different but not better, and we already get "hear us chat about this game" on the podcasts anyway.

I think it's important to remember that Farcry 5 did come out this year. Monster Hunter: World, God of War, Spider-Man...

The crew did latch on to these titles in a big way when they released. We're also waiting on Darksiders 3 and Just Cause 4 although I doubt they will beat out God of War.

God of War (while not a franchise I enjoy) is something that the Giant Bomb xrew all generally liked including the story. That's my best guess for GotY.

I'm hoping to pick this up on the cheap around Black Friday.

Also, the dark horse bet for GOTY is Yakuza 6.
