Resident Evil 5 follows series alum Chris Redfield as he journeys into West Africa with his new partner, Sheva Alomar, fighting Las Plagas-infested enemies called the Majini.
Is Resident Evil 5 a good game?
I've only ever played it singleplayer, and it was awful. The AI for Sheva is just horrid. My experience was that she either was practically hugging Chris, or suddenly you notice her absence and a moment later the screen cuts to her getting decapitated or something. I've heard good things about the Coop, but that just isn't what I come to RE for.
Resident Evil 5 is a good game.
Is Resident Evil 5 a good survival horror game or traditional Resident Evil game? No.
Tremendous looking game but going through it solo, I thought it was not very good. Would not recommend.
Fun in co-op, solid on your own, but either way it's tremendously dumb. Like, at some point you're in an underground Mayan-looking temple city that leads to a high-tech lab and end up punching a boulder in a volcano and you faintly remember that you're supposed to be in Africa or something!?
RE5 was good like movies in the summer are good. They're not great or particularly memorable, but enjoyable while you're watching them.

To be fair, this is typical of most Resident Evil games. In RE1 you're lead to believe that you're only exploring a typical mansion. In RE2 you're lead to believe you're stuck in a typical city infested with zombies. In RE4 you thought that you'd just be running around a rustic Spanish countryside. In RE7 you assume that you're only rescuing your wife from a backwoods household.
But people who have finished those games knows how wildly things change throughout each game.
This question might as well be, "did you play RE5 co-op?"
That's generally how this argument goes, yeah.
RE5 is one of my all time favorite co-op games. I only have around 5 platinum trophies and it's one of them.
Yeah, it's a good shooter (I didn't even mind playing it solo, though it's clearly designed to be played with another human.) It's a big dumb action movie, so far removed from anything resembling survival horror, but on its own merits I still had a lot of fun with it and even went as far as getting the full 1000 achievement points for the base game. It's no RE4, but I can't think of very many games that are.
That said, I replayed it fairly recently and was struck by how utterly exhausting the pacing is. Since it's co-op, there aren't any real slow moments, so things are just constantly on in a way that can get repetitive. Also, there are a couple of sections near the end that I think are not great (fighting the gun-wielding Majini by taking cover at predetermined points is exactly zero fun, as are the giant bug monsters who can kill you in one hit.) It's weird, because I remember liking it more than the first Dead Space when both games were hot and relevant, but I think now I'd probably call Dead Space 1 the better game.
Played it start to finish in coop mode with my brother. It had a really dumb thing where we had to down scale it to use a proper amount of screen space and certain climbing/hanging sequences were really awkward. Other than those oddities, RE5 provided a boat load of laughs and entertainment for my brother and myself.
It's fun only if you play co-op. Otherwise, not so much.
Using the stun rod on your partner so they get eaten by an evil alligator is pretty great though.

This question might as well be, "did you play RE5 co-op?"
@tuxedocruise: Kind of disappointed I had to go 5 posts deep before finding the true correct answer to this question.
Chris and Sheva Fighting Wesker was a very fun co-op experience and is a good - perhaps great - game. But man, RE4 came out in 2005. Chris and Sheva Fighting Wesker came out right around the time it was rumored the next RE game was coming. I was like, "what are you doing Capcom? What's with this weird new IP?" It sucks that we had to wait a while before Revelations came out and we had the next Resident Evil game. Weird choice, Capcom: waiting 7 years between games.
Absolutely!
Especially if you play it Co-op. It was one the the best, if not best co-op game at the time.
Me and my cousin beat the game then immediately went in again.
And when an opportunity came up to play co-op again, I jumped on without hesitation.
Is it a good game? yes. but its not great.
It is a fantastic game. Obviously it is not RE4 which is on the short list for greatest game of all time, but it is great none the less.
Yes, it's a really great game. It was initially just kind of disappointing if you were expecting something more akin to RE4 in terms of length and atmosphere. I also didn't like the new characters as much as what was in four. I know I didn't love it initially, but later on, did and I've played through it so many times. I played it enough so that when I got the current-gen version, I didn't actually end up finishing it as I may have had my fill. I might have finished it if it allowed co-op with two people on separate files like last-gen: it doesn't. There's an achievement you can get by beating the game under five hours; my brother and I did that, but we had infinite rocket launcher ammo which was a lot of fun. The same kind of happened with four, where I didn't finish it as I've played it so many times, and it actually happened with the not-so-great to many people RE6, which I really enjoyed and beat a couple of times with each character.
The co-op part is a fun pop corn experience, some of the puzzle fights are interesting. QTE could either be frustrating or a laugh riot depending on who you are playing with and how many times you or your partner mess up. That boulder punching scene is amazing when you are watching it with someone else, like "dude you seeing this shit right?!" The unlocks keep things pretty interesting and change how you manage your load out. I sort of want to give RE6 coop a try, but the amount of hate toward that game stopped me from trying it during that time.
It really isn't a horror game at all.
RE5 was good like movies in the summer are good. They're not great or particularly memorable, but enjoyable while you're watching them.
Yeah, that's a pretty good way to think about it.
Also, put me down for thinking the answer to this question hinges on whether you played it co-op or not. Co-op is too fun to worry about how dumb the thing you're playing is.
The answer is complicated. It was a terrible follow-up to RE 4 and a terrible solo experience. Yet it was oddly fun to play in co-op and goofy in a way that was kinda endearing.
It is a good game, and it's even better in co-op. Also I seem to remember, that game goes on for much longer than I was expecting, which was cool.
I think I'm at the point in my life where I stopped caring about the accuracy of media if it's main purpose is just to be fun. Vin Diesel flying 100 ft through the air to catch a woman and land on a car windscreen without a scratch? Sure. Chris Pratt riding a motorcycle through the jungle flanked by a squad of velociraptors? Alright, yeah. Chris Redfield punching a boulder into a volcano? Fuck it, why not.
The world is fucking dumb, you might as well enjoy it.
Ben just needs to play it coop. Maybe a Ben/Brad Endurance run of sorts since Kingdom Heartache is no longer a thing. I personally have only ever played it in coop and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll play through it solo one of these days.
Gotta say, although it always had its fans, I'm surprised by the results here. For many, many years Resident Evil 5 to me has respresented the definition of a soulless, committee developed game. It has no no clear vision, not committing fully to being either a scary horror game nor a competent action shooter. Every single thing about the game is just ok, yet it still manages to feel less than the sum of it's parts. It feels almost like it would actually be better if it was more poorly produced, at least then it would have the jank factor to have fun with.
By all means, everyone can like what they like. I just didn't think I was such an outlier.
