    Puzzle Quest

    Franchise »

The Puzzle Quest franchise takes the fantasy trappings of an RPG and makes the primary gameplay a Bejeweled-style matching puzzle game. The sequel, Galactrix, trades in a Sci-Fi setting and Hexic-based gameplay, but the third game, Puzzle Quest 2, returns to its Bejeweled fantasy roots.

Originally developed by Australian developer Infinite Interactive, the Puzzle Quest series merges bromidic puzzle and RPG gameplay conventions to create a game more novel than its individual parts. The first title in the series, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, takes place in the Warlords fantasy universe and bases its puzzle mechanic heavily on Bejeweled. It was followed up with an expansion pack, Puzzle Quest: Revenge of the Plague Lord. Its first sequel, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, differentiates itself from the original by taking place in a distant-future science-fiction setting and uses Hexic as the inspiration for its puzzle element. The third game in the series, Puzzle Quest 2, returns to its fantasy/Bejeweled roots with a direct sequel to Challenge of the Warlords.

Infinite Interactive subsequently developed a series of similar titles including Puzzle Kingdoms, Puzzle Chronicles, Gems of War, and Neopets Puzzle Adventure, based on the popular online virtual pet community Neopets, with simplified mechanics based on Othello.

The Puzzle Quest franchise continued with a series of licensed games based on other franchises, including Marvel Comics, Adventure Time, and Magic: The Gathering.
