Good games of 2009 & 2010 (That I have played)

It was a kind of a shitty couple years. Both financially and for games I actually cared about. If I made a list of games that either didn't draw me in or sucked the least the list would itself would be longer.

List items

  • I am biased. I played this game in beta and have been playing since.

This is a game that has replaced my Fighting Gamer itch. The company is great (although they make bonehead moves), the game is great, the game's community is big and accepting, if toxic, but it's been a good time and a half playing such. Since the game is well known there's not really much to go into with it.

  • Best Pokemon game (I've played them all, I know this for truth) remade, remastered, updated, and just all around good fun. Your standard Pokemon game for veterans, and a good jumping off point for people new to the game.

  • This was a surprisingly good installment to the series, adding in allusions to Gen 1 while flipping man things on their head. Great mon diversity, greater balance changes, somewhat mature story that added a great bit of depth to an otherwise copy/paste story...this game has given an old man like me refuge in like pokemon games 15+ years after the fact.

  • By now it's self-explanatory. Game that involves destruction and is open world, and is huge as crap. Good on a lark, and if you want to sit down and complete it, and is all around a recommended game no matter what.

  • I loved this one as much as the first, but played it a lot less. Story is great, the transition in game mechanics (from rpg/shooter to a more shooter/rpg, if that makes sense) was jarring, but permissable, all the characters where likable. I've been wanting to sit down and play it again

  • I bought this game by accident and started on it/playing it on a bad note, and I ended up loving it. Imagine that.

This game is all kinds of good, from it's musical score to it's kinesthetic feel (game feel!) and is a good game if you ever manage to pick it up. Second one is better, but this game, for what it is, no bad place to start.

  • Good start to a great series. First game has it's flaws, but it's a great game to play with friends or with others. The writing is surprisingly smart for a game trying to be stupid, and much of the world building is set for the player to find rather than it being shoved down it's throat.

Like with Torchlight, the sequel is better. But this game is still good for what it is.

  • After Phantasy Star Universe I thought this game would be dead in the water. Sonic Team didn't work on it and it ended up being a REALLY good PSO-styled game

  • The end of the 4th gen of Pokemon, which is severely overlooked due to being in the middle of being released after the 3rd Generation (one of the best gens, while not being the best games) with Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and Coliseum/XD; and along with the 5th on the same plateform (Black and White AND Black 2 and White 2).

This generation had problems, but Platinum tried it's best to rectify such along with bringing a more central/non-game-difference between it's predacessors Pearl and Diamond. If you ever feel up for delving into such an RPG, this would be one of the games I'd wholeheartedly recommended after a few others.

  • Trine is a good indie game that gives you a Holy Trinity-esque party of adventures that get stuck together and have to roll with the punches.

The sequel is better, but this game should be noted for experimental touch in an otherwise kind of shit year.

  • Street Fightah 4 son.

Honestly, this was the newest edition of Street fighter that had been released/updated for the past 8 years. People thought the franchise was dead, and this shows that not only was it not, but it returned and kept things going for as long as needed. A classic by any other name now, and one that's always fun to dive into for what it is.

  • The successor to Guilty Gear (before Ark Systems Works got the rights to their game back) and a good outing for a 2D fighting game. Heavily steeped in magic and vampires and magical blah blah blah while keeping a steam punk theme strong.

The game is also heavy in self-referential humor and is not afraid to pick at itself, which is very refreshing for a game series to do (and possibly perfected by others). It makes playing a game like this easier to digest.

  • Even if this is at the bottom of the list it is by no means the worst. Rocksteady did an amazing job of adapting the gritty dark Batman into a universe that feels like it's against. You are superhero trapped in an asylum with your rogues gallery that feel that they are trapped in there with you, and the game's combat and visuals help aid in an aesthetic that stands the test of time.
