TeknoDwarf: Best of 2010

  • Yes, it originally came out in 2007, but I didn’t know Persona existed until 2009. Had I known about it back then, Persona 3 could have been my Game of the Year and the vastly superior Persona 4 could have been my Game of the Year for 2008. In Summer 2009, My buddy and I started a Persona 3: FES endurance run, which we never finished, but we enjoyed the 50 hours we played. Now it’s 2010 and the Atlus gods have given me a chance to give this game its rightful recognition. No other games have impacted my life as much and in no other games have I devoted so much time towards as Persona 3: FES, Persona 4 and of course, Persona 3 Portable. Persona 3 Portable is the definitive version of Persona 3 and is my Game of the Year.

  • Super Mario Galaxy was my favorite game of 2007 and it blew me away. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is Super Mario Galaxy, but better. Nintendo went crazy with all of the gameplay innovations and imaginative level design. It’s fun to play, it’s fun to watch. Super Mario Galaxy 2 defines gaming: fun.

  • Fallout 3 proved to me that not all WRPGs are crap and that they can actually take many hours of my life away from me. New Vegas follows in its predecessor’s footsteps by making small improvements to the gameplay and providing an interesting narrative. I loved the faction system and trying be friends with everyone only to realize that eventually I had to kill/betray all of my newfound friends.

  • It took four years to release in the U.S. and 40 hours to get to the open world section of the game. The story is convoluted and Hope is one of the most annoying characters ever. Exploration for the most part is nonexistent and the battle system solely consists of pressing the X button for Auto-Battle. The 360 version is compressed into three DVDs and I had to drive down to my buddy's school from my school to get a PS3 Slim in order to play it the way it was meant to be played, and after all that, I still loved it!

  • This is the other Zelda game of 2010, but is designed in the direction of Ocarina of Time. It also includes elements from God of War, Metroid, Panzer Dragoon, Portal and probably 15 other games just because it can. It can be forgiven because it uses all of these elements in clever ways and no other developers have designed a game like this… except they have, but not all in one giant melting pot. Basically, this is the realistic, dark Zelda that Nintendo will never make and I like it.

  • Since my introduction to the series with Dragon Quest VIII, I have played IV and V, and somehow I find IX to be the best in the series. The removal of random encounters and the inclusions of customizable characters and drop-in-drop-out cooperative play are updates this traditional RPG needed to stand its ground with other RPGs on the market. Now you can create a team of all Gokus.

  • Easily the most adorable game of the year, it literally has the power to make your heart melt. Not only that, but it has one of best crafted art styles and I really felt that the designers used it in order cushion the fact that such an easy game shouldn’t have such a high tax(idermy.) The main theme that is arranged throughout the soundtrack is also one of my new favorite tunes. Oh and one final “MAJIDE KAWAII!! ^_^”

  • It’s The Legend of Zelda and it’s really rad… I’ll stop there before I get sued for copyright infringement, but yeah, 3D Dot Game Heroes is one of the two Zelda homages to release in 2010, with this one resembling the original Zelda for the NES. In addition to wielding a big-ass sword, you can also play the game as one of the many pre-made avatars, or create your own. You can fight evil as a wolfman, a shark, or in my case, Chie from Persona 4.

  • Coming from someone who is terrible at Pac-Man, I was pleasantly surprised that this update of an update was so fun. The game is less about survival and more about boosting your high score and the modified game elements of slo-mo and bombs are a godsend. Nothing is more enjoyable than stringing together a huge line of ghosts and gobbling them all up with a power pellet.

  • From the creators of Psychonauts and Brutal Legend comes a hilarious RPG that brings back memories of trick-or-treating on Halloween. While the RPG elements are very easy, you play this game for witty dialogue and ridiculous costume transformations. I only wish that my zombie cat girl costume from this year would have magic transformation powers.
