My favorite RPG would probably either be Dragon Age: Origins or Mass Effect 2. I've not played as many full western RPGs, and Bethesda's worlds are enormous and amazing, but their combat systems leave something to be desired, in my opinion. Meanwhile, I'm very much a story-centric game player. As a result the mix of world building, storytelling, and gameplay in BioWare's current two big franchises are right down my alley.
Nowadays my favorite JRPG is definitely Persona 4, for all the reasons that most of us know about. If you were to ask me back in my "Golden" game playing time it would probably be the .hack// quadrilogy. I was fascinated with MMOs at the time, but never really had the means to play one. Between the anime story trappings, the simulated MMO universe, a UI that actually conveyed logging in from a desktop from some alternate future, and the character progression and randomly-generated levels, that series really spoke to me in a number of ways. More than anything, I'd love to see an HD collection of those games on current-gen systems (especially Vita).
In terms of SRPGs, I spent an ungodly number of hours in high school playing both Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis and Ogre Battle 64. The Ogre series of Japanese strategy games is definitely one of my favorites.
