2011 Burners

This is my best games of 2011. This is based on played experience, not hype or anticipation (ie, Skyrim won't be on this list yet).

List items

  • Probably a lock for 'arcade' game of the year. Fantastic game. Fantastic presentation, fantastic music, fantastic combat, fantastic execution.

Even after beating the game twice, I'm still in love with the soundtrack and testing different weapon spec/combinations in the combat challenges.

Goddamn, I hope this team makes another game together.

  • I am not a great talent in fighting games, but I love fighting my brother, and I like to think I do alright for a scrub. I've had a huge amount of fun (and some desk-punching frustration) with my bro, thanks to this game.

Also, motherfucking Thor is in the house. Now if only the game would read HCB as HCB and not QCF, I could Mighty Punish correctly and not need to punch my desk.

    A resounding success as a long-awaited successor to MvC2.

  • Duh.

  • There are haters, and then there are people who this game just isn't for. I suspect many people are confused between the two.

Not me. I kinda love this game and wish there were more lively servers. I can't speak to the console experience, but for me this game ran well out of the box on PC (save for some sound problems on one map). I think the launch was problematic and that the game didn't get a fair shake on the whole.

I hope the Splash Damage cats get to carry these ideas forward with a sequel.

I love class-based objective teamplay. I love the art style of the game. I love the character creation. I love how every class, when played well, can feel like the most important contributor to a winning round.

I don't love having to connect to German servers because the only populated North American server at non-peak hours is full. I don't love the sub-optimal-feeling netcode.

  • Is this game flawless? No, of course not silly. Big, flexible, open-hub games are never flawless. Do I really love this game? Hell yeah! Its a shame that the last time I had this much fun with a sandboxy-hub-based action-rpg-fps was Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Worthy successor to the original, and that is no small accomplishment.
