The Pancake List

Games that started off good, and at first I was all excited about them, but by then end, I was fucking sick of 'em. (R.I.P. Mitch Hedberg)

List items

  • Halfway through I got bored. I'm not even bitter, it's obviously a good game, but not for me.

  • What happens when you take a great franchise, you remove tons of features, make the game shorter, and generally dumb it down to play well on a console?

  • I know this is a cult classic, I'm just not part of the cult.

  • I loved star control. At least I think I did, but this game couldn't be duller if it tried. No love from me for this title; I wasted days of my life before I realized that I didn't care about Alien diplomacy. Besides, this game is always dependent on the random map generator. If you have a good setup, you will always win quick, otherwise you struggle and the game drags. I hear this game is popular for the good online component. It must be outstanding to have sold so well.

  • I can't explain myself with this one, it was too long ago, but it turned out to suck.

  • I was really into those "Golden Box" games from the late 1980's! One of these things is not like the other...

  • I paid full price for this, and I'm sure I beat it at least once. The funny thing was, it never really felt like I was "beating" it. It never even felt like a game, more of an empire-building simulation. I am sure that some people have fun with these simulation type programs, but I take serious issue with calling them "games." I think it does everybody a disservice, the fans, because it downplays the seriousness of the genre, and gamers, because it tricks them into thinking it might be fun.

  • I liked "Riven," sort of. "Riven" is not on The Pancake List, "Myst" is. Where I think Myst went wrong was in being too shallow. It has a story, so I'm told, but it never feels like anything more than a glorified pixel hunt with contrived puzzles. I don't think I finished it, but I can't tell you that I didn't. It was that boring.
