@ntm: Don't worry, HLA will not be on-rails. For locomotion, it supports teleportation, sliding between points, and free movement with an analog stick.

I hope the game allows you to play with the world-sharing turned off, like in a private lobby. Sometimes I'm in the mood for rubbing shoulders with randos all over the place, and other times I'm more in the mood for a journey of focused solitude, especially with D4 aiming to recapture the dark and desolate atmosphere of D1. I hope the game supports both kinds of experiences.

I just kind of completely abandoned running on the marketing treadmill for entertainment products many years ago, without giving it any thought. I think it was part of growing up.

Despite DOOM Eternal having been easily my most anticipated game of this year, this delay feels good to me. Now this year's other games can compete on a more level playing field, with some room to breathe. And DOOM gets to play with the big boys in 2020. Next year is really shaping up to be a banner year, between a monster stack of games and next gen consoles arriving.

My completed series:

• Command & Conquer: 9 games (C&C 1-4, Red Alert 1-3, Generals, Renegade) and 8 expansion packs
• Grand Theft Auto: 7 games (1-5, Vice City, San Andreas)
• Fallout: 6 games (1-4, New Vegas, Tactics) and all DLC
• Metal Gear Solid: 5 games (1-5), plus Revengeance and Ground Zeroes
• "Soulsborne": 5 games (Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne) and all DLC
• Deus Ex: 4 games (original, Invisible War, Human Rev, Mankind Divided) and all DLC

That's all I can remember right now. I'm not a completionist about series, so I won't play a game I don't want to play, even if it's the only one in the series I'm missing. As a result, I don't expect to finish any of the series above, except for Phantasy Star and DOOM because those are the only ones whose remaining games I actually want to play.

After Shin Sakura Taisen was announced last year, I decided to get into the series by using YouTube and Kayama's translation guides on GameFAQs to go through Sakura Taisen 1 & 2. Those games have a warmth and earnest old-fashionedness in setting, characters, and story that is complemented very nicely by the loving attention to detail in the presentation. Those games just feel classic somehow. And the main theme is an instant all-time great.

I found myself hesitant to move straight into Sakura Taisen 3 and leave behind the original cast. I also picked up a like-new copy of So Long My Love for PS2, so now I'm thinking I might try jumping ahead to that one.

As for Shin Sakura Taisen, sadly I'm not feeling it so far. To me it lacks that classic vibe that's so distinctive to the original games. I don't care for the character designs or the remix of the main theme either. But I'll still keep an eye on it in case I come around on it.
