@brunothethird: I was considering doing the VPN thing, but now I guess I won't bother since it hit today that Filmstruck is being shut down at the end of November. Hopefully all those films end up landing somewhere else.

@brunothethird: Filmstruck seems great. There's actually a lot of stuff on there that's never seen a DVD release---films that wouldn't be profitable through other avenues, and that's really exciting to me. I'm Canadian, so I can't get it, but it's definitely something I hope we get at some point.

I remember bomb + 180 on Star Fox 64 being pretty OP in multiplayer, but it's been so long.

For Melee, I'd recommend playing Marth and using forward smash a lot (flick the c-stick in the direction of who you want to hit). It's good damage and knockback and newbies won't be able to punish it. Peach is a good pick too, C-stick down for downsmash whenever anyone is close to you, and her float and parasol should ensure you survive a while on larger stages.

I might just echo 1974: Mes Petites Amoureuses, Himiko, Still Life, Female Trouble, The Mouth Agape, Out 1 Spectre, Stavisky, The Man Who Sleeps, Edvard Munch, Alice in the Cities, Cockfighter, Celine and Julie Go Boating, Lancelot du Lac, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, California Split, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, A Woman Under the Influence, Canadian Pacific, The Conversation, Phantom of the Paradise --- I like a lot of stuff from that year.

I'm not too big of a fan, but I like it as an example of 50's Hollywood excess. I'm not religious, so its last section didn't really get to me dramatically, it was a little to lavish to really come across as spiritually compelling. The chariot sequence is of course wonderful though; just excellent use of physical movement and wide screen photography.

I prefer the silent adaptation of Ben-Hur personally.

@luchalma:Yankee Doodle Dandy, Sophie's Choice, Swing Time, Forrest Gump, The African Queen, Shane, a few others. Not trying to say they're bad movies or anything, it's just that they stick out a bit. I like Swing Time more than most, but the only reason it's on there is because they wanted a Fred and Ginger film.

Discussing the validity or importance of a list like this is good to do, though. The canon of American films deserves to change a lot, because looking at the list, there's mostly just financially successful studio films. By its own metric Avatar should totally be on there.

I haven't seen Sophie's Choice, but I've seen the rest. This seems like a pretty cool idea, I hope you find some new favorites!

In my opinion it's not the best list, I think a decent fraction are pretty staid films that aren't really held in super high esteem anymore.

One that always jumps out to me is Denis Lavant's unexpected running movement piece set to "Modern Love" in Mauvais Sang. Lavant has a number of sequences like this across his body of work, but this one is the most memorable to me that isn't also a humongous spoiler.
