Am I alone in thinking Quake just kind of looks like a mess? I'm in my mid-20s so maybe I just don't have the nostalgia, but it seems like you just shoot a gun for 3 seconds, then you get shot and respawn.
FFA can be like that, but the competitive play is in duel and TDM. I suggest watching the Quakecon final from last week.
CA is most popular on pubs because you get all weapons from the start, no rocket jump self-damage and it's round based like CS so you can take breaks when you die. As such it's a more low-energy and relaxing Quake.
But I actually prefer FFA with a reasonable player count to CA.
