So, on rare occasions, there will be transition between a game and it's sequel, that will shock you in the stride it takes.
In some cases, this can completely re-invigorate the series, turning animosity into adoration, or maybe even vice-versa.
What games can you think of that have done this?
Assassins Creed > Assassins Creed 2
When the first game released, reviewers found themselves impressed by the new tech that allowed for huge crowds on screen, but felt the game fell somewhat short.
Then AssCreed II released, and shocked everyone. The game had been completely re-invented. The game was a masterpiece. This is one of the rare cases when a sequel is actually better then the previous game which spawned it. Many will tell you to skip the first game and dive straight into the second.
Grand Theft Auto 2 > Grand Theft Auto III
This one goes without question. The transition from 2d to 3d turned the slightly popular crime game into the game which arguably led to the influx of interest in the PS2, a fledgling console at the time.
Singlehandedly defining the sandbox genre, a concept seldom utilised before this inspired many clones.
One thing is for sure, after GTAIII, the series catapulted into the mainstream, and to this day remains a known name alongside the likes of the Pokemon and Legend of Zelda games.
Resident Evil 3 > Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 has received criticism and applause alike. When re-inventing a series, it is impossible to please it's fans. There is either too much change, or too little.
Resident Evil 4 went through a number of redesigns before finally settling on rescuing the presidents daughter.
The game never did anything too original, but the mechanics it did use it used flawlessly. Over-the-shoulder cam, solid shooting, and somehow, escort missions that actually didn't suck were felt all the more impressive by the varied locales, interesting enemies, and a raft of unlockables to add to the games impressive package. Sitting pretty at 96% on Metacritic, this is lauded as the best survival-horror game of our time.
Any games you would care to add to that list, GiantBombers?
