2001: A School Odyssey

So I started my senior year of high school last Monday, and haven't really done much so far. My classes are fairly boring at present, with the most academically challenging being 4th period.  My full-year schedule breaks down like this:

Model similar to that in my school's Biology/ Anatomy room
Model similar to that in my school's Biology/ Anatomy room

                         1st Semester                            2nd Semester
1st period -   Service Learning                      Advanced Visual Art
2nd period -  Probability & Statistics            Calculus
3rd period -   Personal Finance                    Honors English IV
4th period -   Anatomy & Physiology             Office Assistant

The only sort of "service" performed in 1st so far has been getting cases of water from Wal-Mart to take back to the school to sell at sporting events. Prob & Stats is easy and basically a filler class, since I've already taken the required 4 math classes, but want Calculus to be safe.  The teacher of Personal Fin. (who's also that of Marketing) never gave much work when I first had him freshman year, and it appears he hasn't changed at all.  Anatomy is the only class from which I am expecting a formidable academic challenge, though I passed the first test today w/ a 94.  The thing that bugs me about the class (besides being one of 4 guys in the class opposite 20+ girls) is that the teacher seems to be overly cautious about the two exchange students in the class.  I mean that in the sense that she insists on referring to them being new and needing to take it slow.  Granted, one apparently never puts her name on her paper and constantly gets called for it, but she's very attractive (and Spanish, if that adds anything, which I think it does) and I couldn't care less.  Alas, that is the only class we share; the fact that the class is usually busy, along w/ some seats' being elevated, doesn't help, so I haven't gotten to talk to her...yet. (inner conscience: "Dammit, dude. Grow some balls!)

Geometry Wars: RE2
Geometry Wars: RE2

Anyway, I think about things too much.  Like last Thursday, when I was contemplating a fresh XBLA purchase. I tried BC: Rearmed, but couldn't get a handle on the grapple-instead-of-jump aspect of it.  Sadly, I had to settle for something else. Unsadly (i.e. :) !!!), I bought Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2.  Without ever more than the demoing the original, I immediately fell in love with the latest iteration, and even when coming this >< close to attaining difficult achievements, I continue to love it.  Hate me all you want for not getting Braid, it just didn't make the impression on me that said it was worth my $15.

Well, I need to go work on a 3-minute speech for Service Learning that may or may not be due tomorrow.  I don't know the point of the exercise, besides to substitute for a public speaking class that teachers seem convinced everyone should go through.  Actually, we could pick any topic that is appropriate for school (Monty Python is appropriate, right?), so maybe I'm making it harder than it should be.  On a completely unrelated note, this is the modified version of a blog that I wrote a few days ago, but was accidentally erased when the optical mouse had a sensor-f**k and sped to the X button in the upper-right corner.  Problem currently avoided.

   Closing thoughts:

I will never look at the Sun (the same way again)
I will never look at the Sun (the same way again)
  • If you haven't already, see the movie Sunshine.  It's another great movie from Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later).  The visual work is fantastic, as well as the acting.  The John Murphy score only serves to make it even more memorable.
  • Shoot 'Em Up is also pretty good, but for different reasons. I saw it recently after I picked it up, along with the aforementioned Sunshine and Be Kind Rewind, at a sale my local video store was having.  The gunplay in the movie is outrageous, which, if you're like me, makes it a fun one to watch.
  • My new shoes came in the mail today.  Good ol' Vans; same style as last year, but different colors

Ok, well, I'm hungry.  It's approx. 9:15 p.m. EST, and I haven't had dinner.  Eh, w/e. Sorry for the long blog, but it's your fault for reading it all.

Have Something On the East Coast For (More Than) Once!

Seriously. E3 was in Atlanta for one year, but that was before I was even into gaming.  I'm thinking that maybe next year, after I graduate (high school), me and some friends should fly out and go to a show.  I've always wanted to go to E3, although then I might just be part of the problem.  PAX seems pretty cool, and I do like rainy weather :)

I'm Just Guessing

I was just doing some thinking tonight, though I honestly can't remember what exactly brought me to this.  I do know that I was pondering Bungie's knack for playing around with numbers, and I thought "Hey, is 117 a prime number?  No, it isn't; it's the product of 9 and 13."  So, since the MC (despite having a known birth year) does not yet have an official birth date, and I haven't heard of any conspiracy theories about it, I've decided to grant him a D.O.B.: September 13, 2511.  I admit that 3 x 39 = 117 as well, but there is no 39th day of March.  If this information has been somehow undisclosed, or someone else has already done this, I request that you let me know.

P.S.  Now please, no one go off on some "OMFG! I know when Master Chief wuz born!" rage. That kind of thing just ends badly.  I also ask that you not quote that line in the comment space either.  Sorry, but I'm too tired to deal with it.

What I'd Like To See....?

I guess I'd like some support for displaying Gamertags, Steam I.D.'s, and those types of things just like everybody else.  I like emblems, so something of that nature would be pretty sweet, like "OG - Original Gamesta" for users who joined in the first week perhaps? Just throwing that out there.  Altough I think they're cool, I'm not into making my own banners, so some preset ones to choose from would be much appreciated.  About all I can think of, since this site has pretty much done everything right so far.  Mad props! (NOTE: That is the only time you will ever witness me saying that.)

Neck Is Gonna Be Stiff

My head hurts and my neck is sore.  Why? Because I'm staying up, writing a stupid article, sitting at a stupid angle in a stupid chair that won't roll out, thanks to a stupid air mattress on the floor of the stupid office, because I can't sleep in my stupid room, because my stupid relatives (sorry, gotta keep w/ the pattern) are visiting and one is using my stupid bed.  Thank God this chair doesn't have armrests, else I'd be kneeling and trying to type in what would perhaps be the most uncomfortable position of my life.  Yeah, I do need some sleep.

Is a Hamburger a Sandwich? The Debate Rages On...

Yesterday, a friend and I went over to the bookstore, mall, etc.  We went to eat @ Ruby Tuesday because it was inside the mall, we couldn't decide beforehand, and I love their burgers.  Needless to say, when our food was brought, I had to ask if she thought that a hamburger was a sandwich.  To my dismay, the answer was a negative.  She said that her view of a sandwich was that of cold, sliced deli meat between two slices of bread.  So I countered with a "What about hot ham & cheese and hot turkey sandwiches?".  She acknowledged them but said that it had to be something you can eat without heating.  "Technically, you can eat [a hamburger] when it's still frozen, but it's not enjoyable," I said.  The debate ended shortly thereafter, with the reason not being that either of us won, but that it was keeping us from eating.  As there appears (at least in my eyes) to still be no clear winner, I take my stand by the viewpoint that hamburgers are to sandwiches what spec-ops are to standard military: Specially equipped and assembled to face the most daunting tasks efficiently and effectively.  In the same way that the god Baldur is still too unlike the rest of the Aesir, it appears that some people view hamburgers as still too unlike other sandwiches.

Goodbye Again, Weighted Companion Cube :'(

I know there have been a lot of people submitting stuff, and everyone (who isn't already 1000) is having to wait, but is anyone else having to wait 1+ days for their submissions to go through?  I have some that have been sitting in the queue since yesterday morning, and they still haven't been approved.  I wouldn't even be that concerned about this if it weren't for the thing that I fear would happen, which it did in fact happen.  I wrote a full article for the Weighted Companion Cube around this time last night, and it is still pending. However, within what appears to be the last few hours, a different article has gone up on the page.  I acknowledge that it could have been written prior to mine, but the fact that it was probably written by someone with a 1000+ score or who just got lucky and had theirs approved first is too much of a possibility.  Having only two approved posts and 11 points, while others don't *seem* to be having as much trouble scares me.  I don't want to sound whiny, and please, someone tell me I'm wrong.  I hope they at least make a notice of exactly how the queues work, so we can put this issue to rest.

UPDATE: Three more got approved, but they were only minor. Still hoping for the big stuff to go through (because I hardly did any big stuff). No, they were not approved in order. Odd.....

My First User Review - Ever

I just celebrated the site in my own way by posting a user review for Audiosurf.  As it is my first review, I can only pray that I did well, for the sake of my writing and the game. If you guys care to check it out and leave feedback, it is much appreciated. I doubt I'm much of a writer, but I might as well try. Thanks

Why Did I Go To Sleep?

This is gonna be short because I really want to check out the site.  I've been waiting for the site launch for months now, and my one fear was not being there for it. Thanks to exhaustion and a near-power-outage last night, I wasn't.  I hate nature, but now I can enjoy myself and this wonderful, wonderful website (and never have to deal with GameSpot again). I know this sucks for a first blog but whatever! I have $#!+ to do.
