Just started this one myself. I had played and enjoyed the first Onimusha back in the PS2 days. Then, when I lived in Japan, I found 2, 3, and Dawn of Dreams for 100 yen each (!!). So I'm finally getting into the rest of the series. All I knew going in was that 2 was the most hated of the series, and I have to agree with you that it plays well and looks outstanding. That gift giving mechanic, on the other hand, is outrageously over complicated. Luckily (or not?) my trusty Japanese PS2 got me through that hole into the demon world, where the game gets immediately MUCH more difficult. Anyway, thanks for the write-up. Glad someone is still talking about these old games. Cheers.

First X-Wing & TIE Fighter, and now this? Is it my birthday or something?

@patrickklepek Excellent point about not "participating" in overly revealing marketing campaigns. I'm the same way with big game releases--any new Final Fantasy, Castlevania, or Souls game for example--and putting in that game disc for the first time without really knowing what's on it is always a treat.

So I'm 30 minutes into the PC version of Deadly Premonition, playing for the first time, and already this game owes some serious money in likeness royalties. I'm sure other people have noticed this and I'm just late to a party that started in 2010. But seriously, they had to be using these actors for their facial models, right? The resemblance is so strong it's almost distracting. Anyway, loving the game so far, but I had to see if anyone else had noticed.

I figured out that leveling up thing when I came back to the game a few months later. You're right, though. It's like a reverse cheating.

I know I said I'm a JRPG guy, but I've never played Digital Devil Saga. I suppose I'll have to put it nearer the top of my backlog so I can get my ass handed to me by Demi-Fiend. :)
