Video games of the year of 2014!

2014! It sure was a year. Let's not get into it. But hey, we made it through and let's talk about some good stuff. Like video games!

So I'll say from the top, I don't have one of them fancy new game boxes. And you know what? I feel pretty alright about it. I would like to play some of the bigger things that came out this year, but none of them really jump out as enough for me to get a new console just yet. Honestly, I don't really know what would get me to grab one. Maybe Bloodborne. I don't know. But I did buy a Wii U and I feel great about it! This was a killer year for Nintendo. Six of the games on here are exclusively on Nintendo systems (for now at least). Crazy! And there were plenty of other cool games on there too. A year of smaller games for me. Like I said, there are some bigger games that look cool, but none that really blow up my skirt. So let's talk about the games that did!

Other games that were good/I didn't play enough of: Jazzpunk, Octodad, Broken Age, Bravely Default, Mario Golf World Tour, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1, Roundabout, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Senran Kagura Bon Apitite! A City Sleeps, Threes, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, The Walking Dead season 2 (Boy that fell hard), Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Freedom Wars

  • There are few things I would call perfect. Shovel Knight is one of those things. Playing it feels amazing, it looks amazing, it sounds amazing, it's perfect. It's challenging without being unfair at all. It even has a good sense of humor. It's easily the best thing I've kickstarted. Play this game.

  • Just for fun I took a look back on my lists from the past couple years (more on that later). Last year was when I finally got into character action games. It was a hell of a year for them with DmC and MGR: Revengence. But both those games got outclassed by a witch you don't fuck with. I played through the first game before jumping into this and it really shows how Bayonetta 2 improved everything. No terrible split second QTEs! There are very little parts that drag (unlike the first game. That chapter after the last Jeanne fight UGGGGGH) and the game feels faster and more fun. It's even more gleefully insane than the first, as it should be. Really the only bad part about it is that fucking kid. And also, Bayonetta's new hair. Goddamn. I hope this did well because I really want to see more awesome shit from Platinum. More cool games with great female protagonists!

  • When I finished my first playthrough of this game I immediately started another run. After I finished that one, I started another one. And I'm totally gonna buy the game again on the Wii U and play it some more. That should tell you how fucking good this game is. It finally feels like they made the Shantae game they wanted to from all the way back on the Gameboy Color. It's a fantastically designed Metroidvania with great art (so many cute girls!) and funky-ass jams. Don't sleep on this one.

  • This spot is going to both games. Wish I could do split spots, but eh.

A couple years back I was really surprised when a visual novel, Katawa Shoujo, was really high up on my list. And now here I am with a bunch under my belt and even more that I intend to play.

I saw someone tweet about this the other day. A big reason why Danganronpa works is because it's weird as hell and completely embraces that. Unlike a lot of other things it's not afraid to go fucking nuts with it's weirdness. I love stuff like that. Both games have such a fun, unique set of characters that you can't help but fall in love. But not too much because if you too attached, your favorite is gonna get brutally murdered. I made that mistake. I really like Phoenix Wright, but I feel like I'm more into Danganronpa because of how attached you get to the characters. It makes the twists and awful things that happen to them resonate more. These games are silly, brutal rollercoasters that I love every minute of. Well, except for those crappy court room minigames.

  • I will admit, I have not finished this game. But everything about it so far has been fantastic. This is my first time playing anything related to Etrian Odyssey and I really love it. There's something I really like about having to draw a map. It's a unique tactile feel. I also really like how each area and each level have unique puzzles and enemies that you have to deal with in the environment. I'm totally jumping into an EO game when I'm done here. But more importantly, you get to hang out with your crew again. I think I went into this in the best possible way, having played both games and loving the characters in both. These guys are my precious babbies. It's so fun seeing these idiots hanging out and getting to know each other. I saw another review put it perfectly, this game should be the definition of fanservice done right. I'm really looking forward to where it goes.

And I want to give a quick shout out to Ultimax as well. The new characters are cool and the story gets resolved in a satisfactory manner. It's still super fun!

  • To echo everyone else, yeah it isn't as good as the first. But it's still really great. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.

  • I like Smash a lot. This is easily the best one yet. I really like how they are doing things to accommodate the high level players. I don't like playing that way at all, but it's cool that they're getting their due. It's super fun no matter how you play it. And it's gorgeous too. I'll playing this for a good long time.

  • This made a really strong first impression. The atmosphere of the game is really cool. It makes me actually want to pick up the comic. Even through some of the lulls in the episodes the atmosphere really carried me through it. I really enjoyed my time with it.

And real quick, I did enjoy the second season of The Walking Dead, but man it had a huge drop from the first season. Only the stuff with Carver came close to the greatness of that first season. Hopefully they can rebound.

  • This is one of those games where you hear the premise and you know if you're gonna be into it. The people of Akihabara are being turned into vampires and you have to rip their clothes off in public to eliminate them. To me, that sounds great! But really the best part of the game is the time you spend with in game friends. You may notice a pattern among the games I really love. It does a great job of telling stories about the good parts of the culture around anime, cosplay, and that sort of thing. It's to have a reminder of that with how many assholes there are around those things on the internet. The localization is really good with a surprisingly top notch English voice cast (Spike Spencer! Michelle Ruff! Richard Epcar! Brina Palencia!) I put a decent amount of time into this game and really enjoyed it. Give it a shot!

  • This spot could go to Mario Golf or Kirby as well, but I chose Mario Kart because this is the most I've enjoyed it in a long time. I came back to it recently with DLC and I was reminded how good this game is. Speaking of, that DLC is really exciting, not only because it's really good, but also for it possibly leading to the next game finally being Nintendo Kart or whatever. Mario Kart is Mario Kart but this is the best it has been for while.
