This seems cool, I might actually pick this up (which is unusual for a retro styled indie game)
pretty funny to see all the misplaced outrage in the comments though. Really shows the kinda crowd GB unfortunately kinda attracts, but then again being based in SF who could say it's surprising
I try not to let the increasingly massive left/right wing divide push me away from this site - but as someone on the other side from the pretty liberal GB crew, Mr. Navarro is doing his darnedest to make that a thing here too.
Felt like a lack of perspective, research, or insight onto the subject
EDIT: It also sucks that nobody even remotely challenged him on the assertions & opinions he held about it, but whatever
The amount of bitter people with totally unrealistic expectations for what this could have - or "should" have - been is astounding.
It's Battlefield. It's to WW1 what the first game was to WW2, and what 3 & 4 are to actual modern warfare.
I myself am a soldier, an amateur historian, and have even served as a Great War re-enactor. I care about the impact and the narrative of this period of time. Nothing about this title disappoints me in the least.
This game is an achievement when seen for what it is... not what it isn't.
It's always genuinely interesting, somewhat illuminating, and yes a little disheartening (but just a bit) to hear a civilian musing about the nature of war as it relates to a game. Reminds me of the hubbub around Spec Ops: The Line but at more of a strategic level, and also way less preachy.
Rumsfeld and McNamara undoubtedly made some bad calls during their careers. But they also understood that civil values, laws, and even morality don't apply in the same way to wars. There are rules, sure, but they're different - they have to be in order to hold any traction at all.
Even notions of right and wrong have to change. This is why it's much harder, in my view, to render any kind of absolute judgement about the decisions of the men who must decide when or how to conduct a war. Let alone those who choose to fight them
Anyway, pretty good article esp. compared to the others Austin has featured
