Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

I played some cool stuff this year. This is what I thought about them.

List items

  • I've never played a Tomb Raider game before, nor have I played the Uncharted games, so this specific type of action-adventure game is new to me. I really liked it! The story was an awesome Indiana Jones blend of mystical intrigue/nonsense, action adventure, and environmental set pieces. It also helps that this game is secretly parading as Oliver Queen's Green Arrow origin story.

  • This isn't the perfect game I was (unrealistically) hoping it would be. Most of the issues I have with it are related to the multiplayer. Also, FUCK TREES. But unlike Forza Motorsport 5, I don't feel like there's a lack of content in the first Horizon game for the Xbox One. It's a joy to drive around the (less than memorable) world. Once a multiplayer round gets going it's definitely a step up from the first game. And this game looks absolutely superb. I find myself taking as many, if not more, pictures than I did in the first Horizon. It's not something I've done in any of the Motorsport games, but for some reason I'm compelled to constantly take pictures in the Horizon games.

    But also, fuck trees.

  • Okay, yes, the multiplayer was super broken at launch. However, it seemed to be mostly fixed by the time I had the chance to play more than one or two games at a time. And boy, Halo 2 multiplayer is still the best. Then there's the remastered campaign. DUDE! It looks phenomenal now. The Blur cutscenes alone are enough to put this game high on my list. As a long time Halo fan, they're better than any live action Halo thing that ever has or will be made.

  • Yup, still rad! Satisfying once you figure out the mechanics and how to defeat enemies with your time traveling, multiplying abilities.

  • After the first Modern Warfare I fell off the Call of Duty train. It got too wild and crazy for me. Wait, you're telling me the original CoD developers are making a game with giant robots in it? SOLD. Vertical traversal aside, the on foot soldier side of Titanfall is still Call of Duty. I don't much care for it at all. But giant robots that can punch each other? YEAH! I'm just a tad bummed that most maps aren't built with full on 6v6 Titan battles in mind.

  • Ubisoft thankfully turned around the 360 trilogy of Splinter Cell games with Blacklist. Conviction wasn't a bad game by any means, but the action heavy nature of it was a let down. Blacklist strikes a perfect balance of stealth and action to modernize Sam Fisher.

  • I got a DS Lite this year! Again. I made the mistake of selling my original one years ago, and I was able to get a surprisingly well kept used one off ebay. This is one of the first games I got for it and it's preeeetty good. Unfortunately I haven't finished it yet so can't say more than that.

  • THIS GAME IS REAL DUMB!

  • I hate this game. I love this game. I rarely play mobile games, and this is the one I've played the most by a quite a bit.

  • This game is like an onion of disappointments. Almost everything about Destiny is one bummer after another. The gameplay is really solid, but beyond that is massively boring or incredibly frustrating. Aside from maybe Reach and ODST, the story in the Halo games were never some sort of masterpiece in story telling. But they were "cool guy action stories". Bungie hyped up Destiny's story so much themselves, but any sort of story in Destiny is practically nonexistent.

Then Bungie built the game in such a way that the "real game" begins after level 20, but also made it IMPOSSIBLE to get very far beyond 20 on your own. This put me in a situation where I couldn't play with my friends because we were too far apart in levels, and also couldn't catch up to them cause it would take me FOREVER to solo enough stuff to get there.

I love the look and feel of the world Bungie has crafted, but beyond that, fuck this game.
