Well this is odd. I've come to this post completely backwards. I'm a full month behind on the Bombcast so watched the recent Summer Game Fest footage all the time wondering where Jeff was... I then discovered his new Patreon before listening to BCe741 and only then discovering the existence of this article. As such I suspect its impact has been lessened somewhat than if I'd read it on the day it was posted with none of that additional context.
I've been following this site, the podcast(s), and the crew since the very beginning (Arrow Pointing Down) and it/they have become a fixture in my life for a very long time now. Giant Bomb came into my life as I was leaving college and beginning my working career and the sites subsequent progression, and that of those who created its content, always felt like a kind of marker to my own progression through life. In short, I've grown with this site and the myriad of people who contributed to it have come to be important to me. That's a powerful thing.
And now GB has fully progressed beyond its origins and those who birthed and fostered it. As such I can't help but feel the twin pinch of Jeff's leaving (and to be blunt, the way it seems to have been allowed to happen essentially unmarked) while also thinking that he should feel incredibly proud of everything that this site and the people behind it have achieved. Thank you, Jeff.
Coincidentally my sub has just come up to be renewed and due to my own change of life circumstances I have decided to allow it to expire... for now. I'll continue to listen to the Bombcast and follow the adventures of the new/current crew, but for me this inevitably feels like the end of an era. I do think the site has been left in good hands and hope to be convinced to re-sub at some point down the line.
Oh hell yes! 2M2LN has been one of the shining lights for me over the last few years. Pleeeeeease find an opportunity to get the guys from Mutoid Man involved.
Breath Of The Wind - wasn't that a Spinal Tap album?!
This is fantastic. Love St.V's music and she's a great sport for joining in with this bit of wish fulfilment. Plus, the Dr.D run and subsequent taxi 'escape' are very funny!
Honestly, I'm not really seeing trolling here. I'm pretty sure it wasn't targeted screen-sniping either - if it had been then the onslaught would have been much more noticeable/persistent. What I am seeing is other people playing the same mission and things getting more than a little crowded.
I play Elite: Dangerous as well as Sea of Thieves and in both games there are people very quick to jump to claims of 'tolling' where it's really just a case of them not liking other people playing in 'their' game (both games being PvP open worlds).
On the up side I find these games to have a tension when playing them that is sorely lacking in many others (whether you are engaging directly in PvP or working to avoid it). On the negative, I'll admit that occasionally you do have to deal with some random ass-hat, but in my experience this happens far more infrequently than naysayers would have you believe.
In short, if you play SoT or any similar game like it's a single player game that revolves around you and you alone, you are basically asking to get mugged. Play it expecting trouble (and act accordingly) and the likelihood is that you'll rarely actually see any.
I hope this series does continue, although would understand if the GB crew decided it was a bit too stresfull for an ongoing live stream. For my money SoT is quite unique and the episodes to date have been a lot of fun to watch.
