I'm a fan of Patrick and Griffin but man am I happy that Danny and Mary were around for that segment. They saved it at times, like when the Amiibos innuendoes were going on for about 45 minutes.
Loved it, this might be the most uniquely GBEast thing yet.
The Whose Line Is It Anyway? improv feel of earlier Giant Bomb has kind of gone away on the west coast, but with GBEast it's come back in a way that's recognizable but still totally new. Giant Bomb fully committing - with 100% earnestness - to something so unabashedly dorky is cool to see. Stuff like this is why I was excited about the idea of Vinny building up GBEast. Even if he's not directly responsible for (or even in) the content, pretty much all the stuff they put out feel rooted in his sensibilities at least to some extent, in the same way that a lot of West's (also great, but in a different way) output feels like a result of Jeff's approach to games/the industry/comedy. And since they were such a good pair, it's led to both sides of the site putting out a bunch of quality stuff that almost feel like different takes on the same mission statement. GBWest and GBEast both feel as distinctly Giant Bomb as ever, which really speaks to how well the site managed to expand its scope without losing itself.
Just a really well thought out and well executed podcast. Austin was in his element and everyone else jumped right in, even if they weren't totally sure what was going on all the time. I love seeing Giant Bomb put out stuff like this, because there was that magic combination of everyone wanting to put on a good show and knowing just how to do that. Especially compared to something like Unplugged D&D from earlier this year, where I never cared that much because so much time was spent no-selling and undercutting the premise. That can be funny too (just look at Mario Party Party) but it's important to know when to go that route and when to make the audience care by showing that the people involved care. It maybe sounds like a dig but it's not intended as one - being funny in a group is tough and doesn't always work out even when everyone has the best intentions going in, that's why I'm always so impressed when everything clicks and something like this comes around.
