I really don’t like how personal these things get. People on the show are constantly saying that the whole exercise is about taste, and that the differences between people are insurmountable. That is true. So who cares? That people dig their heels in so hard on this stuff is bananas. I don’t always agree with Jeff, but his willingness to let his game of the year slide off the list was admirable.
This is what happens when processes have no rules. You have borderline ad hominem attacks, votes that don’t matter, and instances of bad behavior (i.e., one person pushing a game into the top ten)are being cited as precedent for justifying hold-ups.
There is a solution; No site lists. Have everyone talk through their favorite games, then talk about what they liked and didn’t like about it. The beginning of this week was great because it was closer to that. Let’s stop pretending that these lists, which are pure endurance contests, actually present “the staff’s” favorites.
