My Top Ten Games of 2016

What a year, what a year. People died, politics happened and seemingly everyone was miserable. Aside from that however it has been a pretty good year for the interactive medium known as video games. Here are the ones I have throughly enjoyed throughout the year.

List items

  • Agent 47 and his tour around the world has had me engrossed throughout the year. Whether it be trying to kill Gary Busey or getting a silent run on the wet bandits or pretending to be a drummer for a rock band to kill the lead singer. The highs or Hitman really are memorable and I recommend this murder puzzle game to anyone.

  • A fourth Uncharted game!? And it's not garbage? Whilst gameplay remains mostly the same, aside from Nate being able to figure out how to swing from a rope. The story is most likely one of the best cinematic pieces probably ever to be produced in a video game.

    AND THAT ENDING!

  • It's a game based on the film based on the game. It's also a discounted price. It had some many things to make you think it wasn't going to be a good game. Insomniac pulled it out of the bag however, creating a colourful, fun playground with engaging weapons and a remixed story that fans (like myself) can admire. Also the movie is not that bad.

  • The first Jackbox was a hit with my friends who didn't play video games. In TJPP3 they go above and beyond the design of the first game by adding better games like Trivia Murder Party instead of You Don't Know Jack, updating Quiplash 2 and adding what could possible be the best party game they have released with Tee K.O.

With this game I have laughed until I have cried and if your friends are scum like mine you will do the same.

  • I completed this game at around 2AM one morning, so very tired and ready to sleep. The story and then ending of Superhot made it so I stayed up even longer pondering as to what exactly had just happened.

  • I have played Rez once before but in VR it is one of those moments that will stay with me for a very long time. I bought a Playstation VR day one, launched Rez Infinite and was overcome with emotion. Interactive art at its purest form.

  • I don't live in San Fransisco, I never played the original Watch Dogs and I'm not particularly fond of the "meme" culture. Watch Dogs 2 however was a fun open world romp that I was engaged in from beginning to end.

Sure it's not going to be the GTA but it doesn't try to be, the hacking and the RC vehicles help carve it's own personality and the whilst the story does outstay it's welcome only slightly, you feel the characters grow throughout the game and realise they are not just the stereotype cutouts they were at the beginning.

  • When I introduce someone to VR, Batman is one of the first things I show them. Whilst it might not be a fully fledged game, the experience is memorable and the story is all kinds of F***ed up for those who see it to the end.

  • Job Simulator may not be the reason why people get VR but the simplicity in gameplay is the reason you keep going. The amount of things you can do with ease is astonishing and the humour is pretty good too.

  • Whilst the story of Inside is very ambiguous, I found that the gameplay does a good enough job to get you from place to place. The setting is the best part about Inside however, I would definitely love a comic or short story done in this style as it's just so damn good.
