2012 Game of the Year

Backfilling early teens in an attempt to put together a decade list.

List items

  • I've played more than 400 hours of this game, if in-game play times are to be believed. Diablo is one of my favorite game series of all time, and even at launch this game was fantastic. Real money auction house and everything. It was new Diablo lore, new bosses, new loot. Everything I needed. Love this game

  • The sequel to another of my favorite games of all time. This remains the only PSN game I have ever gotten every single trophy for. I would guess at least 100 hours of my life have been spent staring at these squares.

  • This game fucked me up. The memory of playing through this game for the first time is forever burned into my brain. It's simply the most gorgeous, breathtaking, incredible thing to come out for the PS3. I laughed, I cried, and I instantly fell in love. Nothing else like it.

  • I'm not super great at WipEout games, but they are a ton of fun nonetheless. Great launch game for the Vita.

  • Guns.

    More Guns.

    Even More Guns.

The core loop of this game taps into the same part of my brain that Diablo does. The writing is uh... special. But it's fun and it's cool looking, and it's a great excuse to hang out online and shoot stuff with friends.

  • I still have the signed lithograph I got for driving out to Orlando for the launch of this game. I think GW2 took a lot of risks, and did a lot of innovative things for the MMO genre. Very much ahead of its time, and still going strong today.

  • The last good snowboarding game, SSX did a lot of the cool stuff from previous games, and threw in a couple of neat mechanics on top. It makes my list just for being a good snowboarding game in a world without any more snowboarding games.

  • The other launch title I got for the Vita I won (thanks Taco Bell!), this is a fantastic way to pass the time on a portable system. I played way more of this than I thought I would, honestly.

  • This game did something I had not seen before, and did it really well. It stuck with me for a long time after I finished playing it.

  • Ushered in the age of the walking simulator. Actually a really cool game.
