Since the latest update my PS3 is so loud now, the fan speeds up within minutes of it being on. I have it displaying a standard def video at the moment on pause and it sounds louder than a launch model Xbox 360...
I'm not the only one to notice this increase in noise too, during a recent TNT the phat PS3 they had sounded like a fan.

The PlayStation 3 (often abbreviated PS3) is the third home video game console created and released by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
Have Sony acknowledged their mistake with phat PS3's yet?

I might just open it and clean out all the dust in there as someone said that helped his PS3 fan noise go back to really quiet levels...but I'm so skeptical that that's the issue as I never noticed anything until the recent update and I had been actively using it before.
Clearing the fans and heatsinks will certainly help.

I don't have this problem with my phat PS3. It's an 80GB model and it's very quiet.
Same here. Only makes noise when I play for very long periods of time, but it's always done that.
clean it out, i have the same problem. it's because it's summer time and it's getting hot, and humid out. i go to my friend's house a lot to play ps3. he will have his computer monitor and i'll have his tv. my ps3 will be a little bit loud and his will be quiet. it only happens in the summer time from what i have noticed.

Yea, my phat PS3's been really loud lately as well. Even when it's sitting idle.
This, but it's been like that since before the update. I should probably dust it out but I don't care.
It might be summer time but it's very cold in my room as of this post and the fan is still ramping up in levels within minutes of it being on, as I said this did not happen before the update and it's been colder this week than the last few here. So I am really not sure what to blame but it all points to the update.
I'll look into clearing it out but I find it hard to believe that it suddenly got clogged up with dust, right after updating...

That's just the Phat. Mine used to get so loud it was nucking futs. It did that for about an entire year before it died.It has never been this loud before, only if it's been on for hours playing a game, even then it didn't get this loud tbh.
My old 60gb is quite quiet. I have heard though that they are really susceptible to dust buildup, so that could be the thing.
from the topic I thought this would be about how Sony overreached and added lots of things that were an expensive waste of money that devs and consumers wouldn't use that made it more expensive than it should have been. Like all the USB ports, the CF, Memory Stick and SD readers. Not to mention tilty support which was a gimmick that was only added to try and look good next to the Wii. I can't remember the last major release I played with tilty support.
That said, I'm glad I bought a phat when they first came out because Sony will never make another PS3 that's as powerful as the original was. Unless they repeat the same mistake with the PS4 and add lots of other features people will never use and charge too much for it.
My first one was quiet until it got the YLOD. Refurb was a goddamn jet engine until it burnt out, about a year later.
my 40 gig is running louder than I have ever heard it before but i guess she is getting a little old.
I've said like 5 times in this thread that my console wasn't like this before I updated, the fan was never like this before, after 5 minutes of sitting on the XMB I'm on like fan stage 3, which is way, way louder than my 360 S after a 4 hour gaming session.@Ygg said:
@JasonR86 said:Why is your post like this ? I remember it always being loud dude.It wasn't loud before this update . fuuuu@Ygg: I'm not sure a loud system means that Sony made a mistake. It's not like some error caused the system to be loud.
I probably am just going to end up buying a slim later this year if I can get one for a good price.

Anyway, it sounds like a coincidence and, like I said, mine has been loud forever.
@Ygg: I have a launch 60 GB model(now 500 GB). I have no idea what you are talking about. Mine is quite as hell. Take better care of your electronics?
Mine's been running pretty loud too. It already died once, I paid money to get it fixed.
I'm going to spray some condensed air into it tomorrow. Playing L.A. Noire, It begins to get really loud, then finally kicks back into a lower fan speed. Something I've learned is that the 60GB run hot like crazy, make sure the thing is away from walls. I'm serious, the amount of hot air that thing shoots out is obscene.
It got so bad a few months back that I propped the PS3 up. This is what it looks like now:
I keep hearing these stories and they spook the hell out of me. I haven't updated my firmware in a while because of that. I don't go online much so it's rare that I run into an issue. My 60 gig runs fairly quiet. Certainly more quiet than my launch 360. I do keep it elevated beneath as vidiot suggested. I did this originally because it was sitting on my satellite receiver and I didn't want the two getting hot so I set a little bridge to raise the PS3 6 inches above and so far, all's working well. Knock on wood.

Sounds like a personal problem. My launch 60(now 500) GB PS3 hardly makes a sound.
You are in the minority then or you just aren't noticing it over TV sound, I've never had a PS3 that hardly made a sound, they all got loud-ish after a few hours but never as loud as this one has started to.@Ygg said:

I believe the sound from the fans depends on the temperature. I have had my PS3 in two different shelves, one of them being a very small space and another a well ventilated space. I remember my PS3 being a little noisy in the small space, but in the new one I cannot notice the sound even if I try. But my PS3 is a slim,, not a phat.

From everyone I know it sounds like you are in the minority. Ours PS3 systems are all really quite. They are just as quite as a 360 slim if not more so.
