A multiplayer mode that pits a large number of players (typically 100) in a winner-takes-all, last-person-standing battle as they scavenge and fight for survival. These games typically take place in a shrinking play zone.
A game in which the object is for each team to retrieve the opponent's flag and return it to their own base. Typically used in multiplayer first-person shooter games.
It's just like Capture the Flag, except... not.
Control Points are typically spots on a map that must be taken and held for one team to beat the other in some first-person shooter multiplayer modes.
A gameplay mode that pits two or more players in a fight to the death. John Romero is credited with coining the multiplayer term "deathmatch."
The ability and danger to gain or lose everything someone else or you are carrying, respectively. Usually seen in RPGs and more hardcore MMOs.
A style of play in multiplayer gaming with the purpose of annoying, irritating and angering other players.
King of the Hill is a popular game mode where the players have to stay in a designated area of a map to gain points. This mode is becoming increasingly popular in shooters.
A competitive multiplayer mode similar to the deathmatch mode which is signified by limited or no abilities to respawn.
When a game has a single player campaign that isn't its own separate thing, but rather just a series of multiplayer-style matches that you play against, and/or work alongside with, computer controlled "bots" instead of other players.
"LAN" is short for "Local Area Network," which is exactly as it sounds. Setting up a LAN allows players to join together locally in multiplayer games through a small, computer network rather than through the internet.
Small achievements awarded within multiplayer games during match progress, Sometimes accompanied by an in-game announcer callout. Usually awarded with kill streaks, multi-kills, objective modes, etc and are sometimes compiled into a "Medal Chest" which archives awarded medals and how many times they have been awarded.
An online multiplayer grouping system that allows players to join a party and "travel" from match to match together automatically.
A continuously updated tally of each player's score, kills, deaths, and other info in a multiplayer match. It can usually be pulled up while playing by pressing a button or key.
Oddball, a 'kill the man with the ball' style of gametype present in the Halo series, tasks players with obtaining and maintaining possession of skulls around the level to earn points.
Games which allow players to interact with others over the internet.
Games with achievements or trophies that can only be obtained while playing online multiplayer.
Player versus Environment, commonly abbreviated as PvE, is a gaming term that originated in MMOs to refer to gameplay in which players fight against computer controlled creatures or characters.
A Priest of Discord can be found in almost every city throughout Norrath. They preach about chaos and encourage fighting amongst adventurers.
Space is usually empty, but sometimes it's filled with virtual death machines.
Sometimes, you want to play games with a real person who's sitting right next to you. These games have you covered.
A Multiplayer game mode where two or more teams fight against each other to the death. The team with the most kills wins.
Games with vehicles that can be controlled. This applies to games that AREN'T focused on just driving, but just happen to have a vehicle segment or the ability to pilot one.
Vehicular combat combines driving and combat to form a unique fast paced action game. Many games are purely vehicular combat based (e.g. Twisted Metal or Vigilante 8) or can contain have sections for such combat (e.g. Halo or Mass Effect).
A new PvP concept to be introduced in Guild Wars 2. 3 servers (worlds) will be in constant combat for up to 2 weeks.
