Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, commonly refers to the programmed behaviors of NPCs in a game, whether it's the fact that a soldier takes cover behind a wall in Gears of War, or that townspeople cheer upon your arrival to their village in Fable.
Collectibles are items such as coins, rings, gems, packages etc. that can be gathered, usually for some kind of reward, or sometimes to simply beat a level. Often (almost too often) the source of earning achievements and trophies on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Palette-swapping are sometimes used to denote the different strengths and abilities of your adversaries.
Games that ask the player whether they are sure about the decision that they have just made.
A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement.
Electricity is commonly used as a damage-introducing element causing inanimate objects to become harmful (electrified water, floors, cables, etc). It can also refer to a power wielded by characters that generates sparks, is conductive to metal surfaces, forks or branches, and is often blue in color.
Enemy Capture is a game mechanic that enables the player to capture or charm enemies. The capture mechanics and the ways enemies are used are myriad, but the effects are always beneficial to the player.
A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
First-Person is a vantage point that attempts to simulate looking through a game character's eyes. It is most commonly found in first-person shooters, racing games, and visual novels, and to a lesser extent in other genres, such as RPGs, 3D platformers, and adventure games.
These spooky entities are the spirits of the dead, returned from beyond their graves for generally sinister purposes. There's generally about even odds whether a particular ghost will be helpful or malevolent towards the living, but some ghosts just want to be left alone entirely.
In many games there is a ranking system, the players with the highest point value are listed in a "high score" table.
A leaderboard is a way for players of any multi-player game to know where they rank within the game's community.
Lock On is a game mechanic that allows the player to automatically center the character's aim on a target, usually done with a toggle or a press of a button.
Using gestures with the controller to control on-screen actions. Alternatively, these gestures can also be detected by motion-sensing cameras.
Platforms conveniently moving you towards your destination to allow the crossing of large expanses which would otherwise be impossible to cross.
Some games feature protagonists that are not humanoid in nature. These are creatures that do not have human characteristics (i.e. stand on 2 legs, have 2 arms, a body and a head).
Certain early physical 3DS games didn't came with digital manuals.
Non-pinball games featuring a level or stage that greatly resembles the interior of a pinball machine.
Who needs 2D when we've got 3D? 3D, or 3 dimensions, is what we're used to seeing in almost every game these days, letting us do all sorts of awesome stuff like run in circles!
A sound effect that plays once the player has gained a level, solved a puzzle or reached a milestone within the game.
Platforms that sway back and forth in a curved manner.
What lies ahead, and is distant from the present.
A hand gesture to indicate approval. Often used when verbal communication is not possible (such as during stealth sections, at long distances, or when a character is mute).
You don't know how to play our game, so we'll teach you how.
