    Simple but Satisfying

Okage Shadow King generally is a smooth and easy game to play which can be frustrating for people who are looking for an intense rpg with grinding. Most would not be a fan of this game simply because the game is so easy that one could just press the x button the whole time in a battle and win without a problem if they grind a few levels ahead. Like the wiki says the plot is about a boy who is over shadowed and to save his sister he has to cooperate with evil king stan to defeat the fake evil kings. The plot is very humorous and it is pretty evident when Ari (main character) meets Stan that the game will continue to have a quirky/funny story.

    Gameplay

The gameplay is considered overall pretty easy. There is no special way the leveling up or stats occur like other role-playing games. It is pretty much as simple as Pokémon. The exp gain system works by defeating monsters and as characters level up they gain new spells which can be used. The most helpful tip that can be given is to grind to level up and that is the most clear way of progression. It is also important to note that getting better items is really important. Overall the actual gameplay is pretty boring and would mostly be considered stale by most.

Most of the gameplay involves searching ruins/dungeons to find the evil boss. Controlling Ari a gamer will have to find keys/buttons to open up doors to other rooms to explore the dungeons. Then there is exploring map of Okage Shadow King too.

    Plot

"Shut up small fry! Gaze upon my horrifying visage and fear it!! Cry, pee in your pants!!"

    Stanley Hihat Trinidad XVI
"He is the reincarnation and the successor to the Great Evil King Gohma"Evil Butler James

The plot is generally humorous and can be a little bit childish at times but when it all comes down to it this is why people play Okage Shadow King. It is not because of the gameplay (which lacks any sort of depth) and it is not because of the music although it is good that is not the point. The game is quite the story and each character has a unique personality, none of them could be considered too cliche. It is rare to see such depth in character. As plot progresses Ari the main character has dialogue options to make conversations funnier which makes it more fun than it should be. Of course the humorous part is not the only plot Okage Shadow King has. But for example later in the game there are certain plot points that twist a gamer's whole perspective on the game and it all makes sense logically.

    Music

The music is not the best of music although I liked it very much. It consists of a very simple yet quirky soundtrack. Battle music can get repetitive as it is the same music for every battle except for boss battles. Background music for new villages are excellent though. There is not much to say on the topic of music as this game does not focus on music like a Final Fantasy game would.

    Recommend it?

I would not recommend Okage Shadow King to someone who is looking for a challenge. The game is just too simple for that kind of attitude from the start. It should only be recommended to people who are looking for an easy rpg with plot.

Other reviews for Okage: Shadow King (PlayStation 2)

Okage is a nice quirky game, but it has flaws to it. 0

I'm on the edge with Okage, it had alot of flaws, but the creative storyline, funny dialog and great characters saved it for me. The characters could get a little long winded in the tooth though. The dungeons were repetitive and generic, but luckily they're short. The random battles can get really hard at times, but you can run away very easily. The loading times are terrible, and I had some really bad slow-downs in a few spots, the bridge at Highland was the worst. I had fun with it though, nic...
