Overview
Taking up a father's sword is a device frequently used in video games as a motivation for the player. The sword can be either literal or figurative. Seeing a loved one murdered at a young age and then having the player take up their cause (i.e. their sword) is an often used plot device. Noble deeds done in the name of the dead is a theme that resonates with many players and has been used time and time again. Characters can be motivated by a sense of duty, revenge, or honor. RPGs frequently use this concept.
