Montross was a member of the centuries old mercenary group, the Mandalorians. He fought on the side of the True Mandalorians in the Mandalorian Civil War against the splinter group, Death Watch. After Jango Fett's recruitment into the Mandalorians in 58 BBY, Montross began to grow envious of Jango, and the friendship he had developed with their leader, Jaster Mereel. Six years later, the Mandalorians were lured into a trap by the Death Watch on Korda 6. Montross and Jaster were pinned down together, and Montross fled his sid, leaving him to be picked off by Death Watch forces. Montross tried to convince remaining Mandalorian forces that he was appointed Mandalore (leader of the Mandalorians) by Jaster, but Jango challenged his claims, and they chose to appoint Jango, whom then chose to exile Montross. He went on to become a mercenary, usually being ruthless with his bounties. In 32 BBY, he was contacted by Darth Tyrannus, or Count Dooku, to compete in an enormous bounty hunt, with the goal being to take down the galactic criminal group, the Bando Gora. Unbeknownst to him, his competitor was Jango Fett, both unkowingly competing for the chance to be the template for the clone army on Kamino.
