so ive never been a playstation fan but ive always been interested in metal gear from a far and im wondering if just watching all the cutscenes from the games is enough for me to learn the plot or if i should watch playthroughs
yah you should know a good portion of the story just by watching the cutscenes, only thing i can think of that you would be missing is the boss fights where you might miss some story elements.
I remember that in Twin Snakes on Gamecube (remake of the first), there was a cutscene viewer that actually described the boss battles with text in between the battles.
But year, the cutscenes would be sufficient. Or if you're in a hurry, Wikipedia has nice plot summaries (and you may want to go there anyway, because it can get rather convoluted).
There is a lot of stuff that happens outside of cutscenes, through in game discussions or Codec stuff. You could understand the story by watching the cutscenes some what, but it would be a distilled experience that isn't necessarily better.

Yeah, especially in the first two, as much story is told via CODEC as is in cutscene. Don't skip those.
