It looks like Konami licensed out the MGS brand for some of that sweet sweet ad money.

Yeah saw this earlier on gaf, it's pretty mindblowing. Is that David Hayter? Must be weird for him. Especially since he's referring to fultoning the car.

I realized watching this that MGS' explanation style is basically iconic, which is nuts.

    Nuts?

That's right Snake, nuts are a delicious dried fruit, but also a way of calling something crazy.

    Crazy, huh?

Yes. In the 19th century, writers began using the word to refer to a "dried up" brain, one that isn't smart. Hence, nut began to mean crazy. Today, that legacy lives on.

I honestly thought this was some older ad because no way would they bring back David Hayter as Snake, right? But then I heard him mentioning Fulton Extracting the Ford Focus SE and boy was I wrong. Great yet dumb commercial.

Alternatively, that has to be an exceptionally easy impression to pull off. They may have just hired a sound alike.

Weird, I was listening to this interview today:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbOobpKqJn0

He mentions the Ford car ads, then this thread pops up. :O

I do not think they got Doug Stone for Psycho Mantis in that second one, unless he's just way out of practice for that voice?

Maybe, there's definitely some differences between this version and MGS1 Doug Stone, also note Doug Stone's Mantis voice sounded perfect in MGS4, even when he was talking about Dualshock 3's rumble functionality and the lack of memory card.

@drdarkstryfe: I remember seeing parts of the script for this floating around. This is the last thing I expected it would be.

Also, Ford now have the name for their next series of cars - "A Ford-D?!"

@hatking: It's Hayter and Eiding. Hayter tweeted the first part of the script a while ago.

Doesn't seem like the best ad Ford could want. Having a small screen in the middle give a weird view of the car while two characters rattle off the features.

Then again, i just watched two ads solely because they were Metal gear branded.

Ford also did ads with Dragonball Z characters (and their original English VAs) a while ago, so this isn't as bonkers crazy to me as it should be. On one hand, these ads are super weird and I'd argue they don't do the best job of selling me the product advertised. On the other hand, it's nice to know someone in a position of power at Ford's marketing department has an affinity for both Dragonball and MGS.

They apparently have a whole lot of these. Here's one from Captain Planet. Yeah, it's probably an eco-friendly car or whatever the fuck you want to call it, but there's still some great irony there.

Now I'm just disappointed the car isn't modeled after REX or something. I want a convertible that plays a "BROTHERRR" sound clip from loud-speakers every time I retract the roof.

To put this into context, it's not the first time some nerds (and I mean that positively) in Ford's ad department got something crazy greenlit.

This was my first thought too. I can't tell if these ads are actually kinda tongue-in-cheek funny or agonizingly pandering...maybe that's the point...maybe that means they're working.

It bugs me when people get excited about this kind of thing.

On one hand, I think it (especially the Psycho Mantis reference) is just too random and has too little to do with cars to even matter.

On the other hand, maybe Ford's marketing people are just big geeks and can't keep their own interests out of their work, but it's far more likely that market research is telling them that there's a huge, untapped market of adults their usual advertising efforts never reach who watch DragonBall and play Video Gamez and are so myopically in love with those things that if you make a random reference to them in your next cheap, online-only ad campaign, then they might become loyal buyers of your products just for acknowledging their geeky obsessions.

I can't wait until every product's commercials have He-Man, Thundercats, lines from the Princess Bride, CG-altered Monty Python sketches, Cloud Strife, headcrabs, Psyduck & Hobbits on them. That would be soooooo much better than telling me why their products might be any better than their competitors'.
