    Being from other planes of existence Mephits vary in form, mirroring the defining characteristic of their home plane.  Baldur's Gate 2 had the player fight through a legion of elemental Mephits in the starting dungeon: Ice, Fire, Lava, Mist, Smoke and Steam.
    Mephits are created by lower planes creatures as messengers and agents for tasks in all the planes. Individual Mephits give themselves impossibly long names like Garbenaferthal-sprite-slayer-greatest-of-all-the-steam-mephits.
